If you use recruiting rankings the most talented teams are Ohio state and Illinois. Illinois has like 7 or 8 top 100 players. Not that I think we will be all that good.

Hmm . . . I had not gone back through Rivals to double check. Just going off memory/opinion, I figured the talent level at top was Ohio State-Michigan State-Illinois. (But, after the past few years, I could see why some are not into the whole Illinois-talent thing.)

-Purdue? Hummel is great (when healthy). Their backcourt is good and deep. The rest of the frontcourt . . . uh, well, did I mention Hummel is really good?

What has been severely lacking so far is Purdue's defense. Teams are figuring out how to score on them, and Painter has yet to adjust. As you mentioned, they lack an inside presence. Granted, it's early in the season, but based on what I've seen so far, Carroll has not taken the step forward I had hoped this year and Marcius really isn't developing as quickly as many thought he would.

What do you think of Anthony Johnson so far? He's going to be a good one. I bet he's the leading scorer next year and makes the All-Freshman team this year. Maybe I'm too high on him... Some of the Illinois posters here were pretty down on him. I think the RS year was exactly what he needed.

I like him, but I worry that he's going to struggle on defense a bit, as he looks like a stiff breeze could knock him over. I'm really curious to see how Jacob Lawson develops. They're going to need him to at least provide interior defense and rebounding, even if he won't contribute much offensively.

He looks like he's grown a bit and put on a bunch of weight since his Whitney Young days.

Illinois coasted against an overmatched opponent again. Next stop: avoiding a Utah-Bradley level embarrassment in Cancun against Richmond and Rutgers/Illinois State.

I watched the 1st Half and didn't think they looked very good. The offense is really going to struggle at times this season.

Yeah, some of Lawson's blocks have been sick. He'll be good at cleaning up garbage around the rim but I don't think he ever develops beyond a defensive player with a few dunks and layups each game. Don't get me wrong, Purdue needs that type of player too, especially with his level of athleticism.

I'm most dissapointed with Terone Johnson. So much hype, and he can get to the rim, but he has trouble finishing and is a mediocre shooter at best. He shouldn't shoot 3's unless he's wide open. He looks like he struggles with confidence.

He still doesn't have a B1G body, but after Hummel, and maybe Terone Johnson, he's the only guy that can create his own shot. He's a pure shooter too. I think his FT issues are mental right now. He said he was shaking during his first start the other night due to Freshman nerves.

i like our athleticism a lot. i like how DJ looks much more versatile and dynamic than he did last year. i like how leonard meyerson is altering pretty much every shot around the rim. i like how they run the floor. i love bertrand, he needs to play more. i like the fact that the freshman are getting experience, counted 4 on the floor at one time last night. shaw is as advertised, a guy that does a lot of little things--he's also 6-9 if he's an inch, not 6-6 like people were saying last year. i like griffey's solid play and rebounding thus far. i like that paul looks stronger and more comfortable finishing at the basket, keep that up.

i don't like that fact that we look sloppy a lot and that our jumpshooting is suspect. those things could derail our season and keep us out of the tournament. i'm optimistic about our chances right now, though.

I'm hoping Lawson can fill the role of inside help defender much like Johnson did the previous four years. It's obvious that Carroll and Marcius don't have that kind of ability to switch over and swat driving guards. I actually think Marcius has it in him, but everything I've heard is that he's still awkward out there.

I've been pleasantly surprised at Barlow's scoring prowess. The guy has ridiculous athleticism, developing a jumper is going to open up driving opportunities for him.

Ryne Smith has turned into a freaking assassin behind the line! 5 for 6 last night. If Smith, Hummel, Jackson, Barlow, and the Johnsons can all legitimately shoot the three, this is going to be a team that can put up points in bursts.

My disappointment has been Byrd. He hasn't been getting any kind of minutes with Hummel back. I was hoping he would take that step that many have been anticipating since his freshman year.

Yeah, Terone's outside shot needs a lot of work.

I will say that I'm impressed with how Barlow has looked early on...offensively anyway. He's developing into more of a scorer, which is what they need. He still needs to be a little smarter about knowing when and when not to fire up a shot though, and unfortunately, he's never going to be a great 3-point threat.

I'm hoping his minutes will pick up though. He is capable of hitting outside shots and has enough size to grab a few rebounds here and there. I knew he'd lose some minutes, but I didn't anticipate this much of a drop in playing time for him.

Posted

Byrd's minutes are down due to injury, he completely missed the High Point debacle. I think he'll play more minutes once he's healthy again.

Barlow needs to continue to work on decision making and concentration. He's a streaky shooter but most of that is concentration I think. You'll see him throw up a very nice form 3-pointer and hit it, followed by a poor technique brick.

According to Rivals he had offers from Illinois, Ohio St, Marquette, Cal, Iowa, and Iowa St. I don't know how accurate that is and how hard Illinois was trying for him though. I think he's a good fit for Purdue at any rate. Plus he's coming in at a good time to have success as a scorer.

ugh, purdue hour, how i loathe it. it's just not the same without da bum.

We should probably talk about Hummel more. I know you love the man.

they offered him early, and got commits from better players before he could pull the trigger. he had his illinois offer pulled before he committed to purdue.

Yeah our coach isn't getting much out of our talent yet. But we have a ton of talent right now. Miles Lennard is a beast.

And Anthony Johnson follows that talk up with just about one of the worst 20 minutes of basketball possible. Wow!

Yup. Complete deer in the headlights so far today.

I was just thinking, well he can top if off by missing these 3 FT's.....yup.
