Sucks to be them:

Matt Holliday is out indefinitely following an appendectomy.

And the hits just keep on coming for the Cardinals. Holliday will be evaluated after the surgery, which will take place Friday, before the Cardinals determine how much time he'll miss. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that it usually takes 4-6 weeks before a player can begin "strenuous activity," but Yahoo's Tim Brown reports that Holliday has been told he'll likely miss 3-4 weeks. The Giants' Andres Torres returned from an appendectomy last year in just 12 days but later admitted that he probably came back too soon. Either way, he's almost surely headed to the disabled list. Jon Jay and Allen Craig will see the bulk of the playing time while Holliday is on the shelf.

Was this an emergency appendectomy?

You almost think it has to be with 3 weeks being the minimum time he will be out. I know the article says up to 4 weeks, but on ESPN they just said up to 6 weeks.

Is there any other kind?

Nope, and it isn't fun. My wife said I should just stop being a wimp and go to bed. I was hospitalized with post -op infection. It takes a minimum of three days for your system to get back working properly and that is rare.

No idea. I figured an inflamed appendix could be found in a physical that wasn't about to burst. I do not know how these things work.

There are a few different surgical options here, from the traditional approach where the surgeon cuts through the abdominal muscle, to more advanced laproscopic procedures where just small holes in the muscle are made. The amount of scarring done to the abdominal muscle will largely drive recovery time.

Of course another issue is whether the appendix burst, potentially spreading infection in the abdominal cavity.

I worked with a guy at my old job who needed an emergency appendectomy. Just 12 hours before he was on the operating table he was fine, we were talking and joking around, and then he went home, went to bed, woke up feeling like warmed over death with a severe pain in his side. His then-gf drove him to the hospital and he was under the knife within the hour.

Yeah, if it bursts that leads to a whole host of other problems.

Holliday's appendix did not rupture before the operation, which is a significant factor, allowing for optimism about his recovery time. He will be restricted from virtually all strenuous physical activity for five days. The club hopes to make a decision on whether to place Holliday on the DL sometime early next week.

Yes, preventative.

Yes it's becoming more common for surgeons just to go ahead and remove the appendix if they're already in there doing another procedure.
