I hope Coleman is ready for an early season callup, because no team can allow Cashner but so much of a leash, before he overworks the pen by himself. Hopefully, he comes out and gives us a couple of solid innings after that one, to give him some confidence heading into the season.

Cashner seems to have settled down nicely. 2 H, 0 R 0 BB 4 K in innings 2-5 (after 5 H, 5 R, 1 BB 1K in the first).

In his 3 ST starts, he has given up all his earned runs in the first inning.

Maybe its just nerves.

Glad to see Cashner bounce back like that.

Is it just me or has Shark had some fairly decent outings lately?

Yeah he was doing a great job keeping the ball on the ground today.

Yeah, he pitched great after the 1st and he's not been all that good in any spring trainings as of yet to begin with. Maybe he's just a slow starter. Wound up throwing 72 pitches, then went to the pen and threw 15 more. About all we can ask for.

There are going to be some bumps along the way for sure. I'm certainly expecting an ugly start or two from Cashner this season, but Quade and Riggins seem like they see his potential and are willing to put up with some growing pains.

That's it?

I really want him to do well, but let's be realistic. He's almost certainly going to have at least several ugly starts.

I think one of the best outcomes of Silva's release (other than simply not having him around) is that there is no veteran "heir apparent" to Cashner's rotation spot if he should falter. Had the Cubs stashed Silva in the 'pen, there would be great temptation to insert him into the rotation as soon as Cashner struggled. With Casey Coleman presenting the lone threat to Cashner's position (from several hundred miles and a roster move away), Cashner should be afforded a much longer leash. That Quade, Riggins and Hendry allowed this situation to materialize suggests that they have considerable confidence in Andrew.

Yeah. I should have said several. Not sure why I said what I did.

According to Bruce Miles, Castillo was optioned today. The roster stands at 26, so they must be either considering taking Max Ram over Hill or at least trying to convince Max to develope a phantom injury. I still say that a guy who can play a below average C, 1B, and OF is more valuable than a guy who can play OF and can only hit lefties.

I'm just gonna go ahead and tell myself Zambrano's start today was just him ironing stuff out.

Man imagine the bullpen if Grabow didn't suck and Mateo stays healthy.

I'm willing to give Grabow another chance, assuming he's in a lesser role. Whoe knows, maybe last years suckiness was injury related. He never deserved the 8mil deal, but maybe he can be decent middle relief.

Maybe Quade can handle the concept of using someone strictly as a LOOGY?

Garza is throwing beachballs apparently

From the way Len is talking, the D'Backs have been getting rather lucky. All 4 hits in the 1st were ground balls that found holes. Now here in the third there were two bloop hits to left. The homer was crushed though.
