A western Michigan high school basketball player collapsed on the court and later died after making the game-winning shot to cap his team's perfect season.

Holland Hospital spokeswoman Deb Patterson says 16-year-old Fennville High School basketball player Wes Leonard died Thursday night. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Patterson says paramedics performed CPR on Leonard before he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Holland Sentinel reported that Leonard had scored the game-winning layup in a 57-55 win over Bridgman in overtime to cap Fennville's 20-0 season. Leonard fell to the ground after teammates and fans rushed the court.

Yeah, heard about that. I'm not a doctor and will never be mistaken for one, but I can only imagine that he had some sort of heart condition that went undetected and the adrenaline rush basically caused a heart attack.

"Incredible" seems like an odd word choice.

True. I use it a bit differently than some, I guess. It's means hard to believe for me, as in not credible but still true. But there is often a positive connotation attached. Sorry if I misled anyone.

This hit really close to home for me. I have grown up my whole life visiting Saugatuck, MI which is the town right next to Fenneville and worked there for 4 summers throughout college. I worked with a lot of Fenneville graduates and some still current students last summer. So some of my former co-workers are classmates with him.

Needless to say my prayers are with all my friends in the area.

Very sad story. However, (not to make light of it) there are a lot worse ways to end your life than hitting the game-winning basketball shot.

It wouldn't shock me at all if it was an enlarged heart. It seems like you hear about a basketball player dying from that somewhere about once every year or so.

Yeah, I don't know about that. Dying at 15 is never the ideal way to die.
