It is. He's not a bad pitcher by any stretch of the imagination, but he's often referred to in news outlets as if he's one of the Yankee greats. He's only had 4 seasons in his 16 year career with an ERA under 3.80.

His 240 wins are largely a by product of playing on stout offensive teams, but dumb writers will attribute it to him being a winner.

Probably the one pitcher besides Kerry Wood who's career I've followed from beginning to end...my favorite Yankee from those dynasty teams...seriously a very likable guy who had himself a very good major league career for it's most high profile team.

I doubt it, but I wonder if Pettite making it official reawakens the Yankees desire to add a starting pitcher. Might another Zambrano to the Yankees article be floated by one of the NY papers?

I could see Pettitte squeaking into the HOF even with his PED use. He has a great case for longevity and a lot of wins, including 19 postseason wins!1!

It will probably take him a while though.

Pettitte was a really good pitcher and, by all accounts, a good guy and a good teammate. But he's definitely not a Hall of Famer, and it's nice to see most writers/news outlets agreeing with that sentiment instead of bowing down to another Yankee "great."

Weird that his PED use was ok with the media

agreed. those that were truly awesome and suspected or discovered to be PED users should be strung up. but the fairly quiet guy that was really good (not great, imo) for a long time and admitted to using was basically ignored.

Then again, Clemens will probably have him killed during his perjury trial, so maybe he'll get into the HOF posthumously.

it's funny how so many players won't admit to using steroids. pettitte admitted it (well, hgh), people talked about it for like a week, and then nobody cared any more.

But he didn't cheat. His own words.

Not to mention his "retire or not retire" theatrics every offseason for about 3 years running that Favre gets ripped for.

I think a lot of it has to do with not lying about it. Being caught sorta forced him to fess up, but look at how Clemens currently looks to the world since he continues to deny, deny, deny.

Part of it might even have something to do with the fact Pettite doesn't have his name atop any records that give people more reason to be angry with him.
