Low risk, high reward deals. Worst case scenario is that they have to waive them for not performing. Tampa can afford this and they have plenty of kids waiting in the wings. This allows them to stay down in the minors and hope they catch something out of one of those two. It might even help draw a few people in the stands. Not very likely but possible.

This is perfectly fine when you have a team who doesn't block their young players when they're ready. So, the Rays can do something like this, and the Cubs still can't. Rays 17, Cubs 0

Just out of curiosity, who have we really blocked in recent years? Micah Hoffpauir? Jake Fox? Sam Fuld? If we had a shred of the big league ready talent in our system that The Rays have, I assure you that they wouldnt be asting away in Iowa.

No, no, and no. Pie was the main guy I was thinking of. Although he was up, he wasn't given any sort of chance to work through anything. Neifi/Macias blocked Cedeno. Koyie Hill would have kept Chirinos down and didn't we sign Trachsel when either Rich or Sean could've been the 5th starter?

Pie was 4 years ago, and since then we've seen Soto, Colvin, and Castro treated in a better fashion, with indicators that Cashner is a favorite over Silva for a rotation spot.

Also, Robinson Chirinos is garbage.

Lulz, on Chirinos. I wish Hendry wasn't a dope and give that Abe Vigoda fella a shot over Zambrano.

And wasn't Pie more of a Lou debacle?

1) is Chirinos not better than Koyie Hill?

2) Sure, and Neifi was Dusty's. I wasn't ascribing blame to individuals within the organization

Maybe minimal at best. I would rather keep Castillo than the guy who has been in the minor league since my foray into higher learning.

I wouldn't say Pie was blocked, he was given the opening day job as starting CF. It was more a case of lack of patience.

Keep in mind that the Rays have Desmond Jennings who probably is as ready as Pie was back then and they are now kind of blocking him with Damon so it isn't that different.

Manny kind of makes sense because they need the DH anyway and he is super cheap but the amount they will pay for Damon considering how much production he will give over what Jennings would have done seems to be more of a play to drum up interest and sell tickets.

And as much as I hate to say it, but wasn't Lou essentially right in regards to Pie?

Pie's still showing some promise. I don't think we've seen enough to peg him as a superstar, but there's still reason to believe he can be a solid everyday player. Whether he was ready or not at the time is definitely up for debate, but it would be very easy to argue that we should have been more patient with him at the time.

No.

Letting Chirinos destroy AAA pitching was probably better for his trade value than bringing him to the majors to be similar to Koyie Hill anyway. Going with Koyie over Castillo or Ramirez this year would be much worse, though you're still not blocking likely ML regulars.

Pie wasnt blocked at all, they just ran out of patience too quickly. 2008 was a bad year for him to struggle, because we were favs for the divison, and didnt have time for him to train him on the job, so the options were to either let him waste away on the bench or go to Iowa. I think they made the right choice at the time. However, the next off season, shipping him off to Baltimore for next to nothing and then turning around and signing Joey Gathright was just idiotic. If they had gotten something, it ould have been one thing, but they just ended up with some pitcher who The Padres supposedly wanted as a piece of a Peavy trade, and we ended up flipping him to Seattle for Aaron Heilman.

Somehow I can't see Manny being too motivated when he is only making $2M a year. I don't think this will end well.

What? Why would how much he's making have anything to do with his motivation?

TT hates Chirinos like he loves Pavano
