How does that quote from LaHair show that he's got the inside track on the 1B job? It's more drooling sports media bufoons being drooling sports media buffoons.

"Inside track," no.

But an "opportunity"? That means that there is something that LaHair can do between now and April to make the team. He's not just going away as some have hoped. Epstein doesn't seem like the type to tell a player they are getting an opportunity if they don't mean it.

I'm perfectly fine with LaHair getting a chance to make the team. I'm not TT

You guys are silly. The guy had a really nice year at AAA and the Cubs currently have an opening at 1B. How could you not tell him he has opportunity at this point? If the Cubs sign Pujols or Fielder, the plans change. If they don't they will probably go cheap there, and it would be silly to not give him a shot, along with some other candidates, maybe some undervalued guys they dig up and sign for cheap.

We all wanted Theo because we trusted him to do his thing, and so maybe we should do that.

How could you tell him? It'd be pretty easy.

"We don't think you are a fit, Mr. Zuleta HoffpauirLaHair. Good luck!"

People are looking too much into that LaHair quote. All he said is that he's being given an opportunity. When you're a 29 year old career minor leaguer, a spot on a big league bench is a hell of an opportunity. I have no problem with LaHair on the bench. He has more power than Colvin and can play outfield and 1st. Besides, even if Fielder and Pujols were out of the question, this early on I highly doubt that they would have approached LaHair at the GM meeting and said congrats, you're our starting 1st baseman. While he'd by my plan C rather than someone like Pena, Kotchman, or Loney I like to think that our dream team would have other options up their sleeves before saying to hell with it, let's just go with LaHair.

Does anyone really think that Hoyer and Theo are walking around with a cocktail napkin reading something like

1.Albert Pujols

2.Prince Fielder

3. Bryan LaHair

I wouldn't be too terribly nervous about anything if the source is ChicagoNow.com. Sure, they're a subsidiary of the Tribune, but half of the "journalists" on that blog are lucky if they spell everything correctly. Somehow, I don't think they're going to be the ones to break any serious news on this, or on any other story for that matter.

I'm sure Bryan is very excited about taking advantage of this opportunity to show that he's a plus defensive shortstop and competing for the reserve middle infielder role.

We already have a perfectly good guy for that job. Now if only we could give it to him and find a starting 2nd baseman.

Cracks me up how all these reporters ran with a complete throwaway joke comment by Theo about Rodrigo Lopez.

Yes, the Cubs are meeting with Dan Lozano on day one of the winter meetings to discuss Rodrigo Lopez.

Wow the Marlins really aren't messing around. With Reyes, Ramirez, Stanton, Morrison and Pujols, that'd be one stacked lineup.

I'm all for the Marlins getting Pujols if we don't.

They're not in our division, anyway, so even if they're awesome, it has little impact on our chances.

Cubs are eyeing fielder more than pujols. they've talked to pujols but won't do 9 or even 10 yrs for 31-yr-old.

Awwww yisssssssss

I'm happy about that. I like Prince more. Pujols to Miami would piss me off due to the fact that I hate everything about that franchise. However, he could conceivably bankrupt them and force MLB to make asshat sell.

Cubs don't have a 3 or 4 hitter now unless starlin becomes one. Fielder a good fit. he has 1.000 ops at wrigley. Sveum loves him.

I wonder what prompted this little Fielder and Cubs kick from Heyman all of a sudden. Sounds like he certainly heard something.

I doubt I'll get over 2003 until Cubs win the WS or have something even more devastating happen to them.

Between this Marlins offseason and the Heat, I'm just getting pretty sick of Miami in general. Fans that crappy shouldn't have such talent. At least the Dolphins suck I guess.

Jon Heyman just posts whatever Buster/Rosenthal/Crasnick post but 30 min later like he's confirming it.

Long as we never run into them in the playoffs again. Depedning on how their young guys turn out Pujols, Hanley, Reyes, Stanton, LoMo, and Dominguez would be downright scary. With JJ, Buehrle/Wilson/front end starter, Nolasco, and Sanchez, the rotation wouldn't be anything special but good enough for that kind of lineup.

It's the playoffs. It barely matters how good our opponents are/aren't.

we like guys who say things we like.

That's completely irrelevant. I was merely noting that he wasn't in fact reposting something Olney/Rosenthal/Crasnick or anyone else for that matter had already mentioned.

I gotta say, Fielder to the Cubs and Pujols to the Marlins would be an outcome I can more than live with.
