A cardinal fan friend of mine and I were talking about this. There are only a couple of options for Albert. The Cards could sign him, but it would all but cripple the franchise financially. That leaves the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, and possibly the Angels.

Not sure if Albert is a california guy. The Red Sox have a 1B. That leaves the Yankees and Cubs. Both would be able to pay an insane amount of money by then.

Yankees have a 1B too, but I suppose one of them can DH.

How much payroll can they really keep adding? I'd think even they would have a limit, especially if they sign Lee.

I'm positive that logical or not, Pujols was at least somewhat in the minds of the Cubs' brass when they gave Pena a 1-year deal.

Not only would he be nice to have in the lineup, but the best part of it (living 3 hours from both cities) would be listening to all the cardinals fans cry. They sure are an obnoxious people, around here at least. (I know we have a couple of cardinal fans on this board and they aren't so bad, but in general)

The Cardinal's fans reaction to this would be great. That one dude whose youtube videos we posted a couple of years ago would kill himself. I'm sure of it.

The most teasing fact about this whole Pujols possibility is that the two richest teams in the league already have very expensive, excellent and not over-the-hill first basemen. The Angels would put up a fight, but there really isn't a lot of competition for him assuming it is accurate that the Yank-mes and the Red Sox wouldn't join the fray.

Even if it crippled us it would still be worth. Luckily it wouldn't. It would surpass anything Lebron did.

Do you think they could get Joe Buck to interview him during the announcement?

Pujols will sign with the Cardinals for less than he'd get on the open market even if the Yankees and Red Sox were bidding.

Just for fun, here's how much Fangraphs says Pujols has been worth since 2002.

2002: $14.9m

2003: $26.7m

2004: $24.3m

2005: $26.8m

2006: $30.8m

2007: $34.2m

2008: $41.7m

2009: $39.0m

2010: $29.3m

I think the Cards should have to pay him that prior to any new contract.

This. It's comparable to Lebron leaving Cleveland.

Him going to us may be worse because we're their arch rival.

Except Pujols already got them a ring, so it won't sting quite as bad for them.
