Red Sox sign Carl Crawford

holy hell thats a bad contract. Makes it seem like we got off easy with Alfonso.

Is this just the trend now, are the inflated contracts ever going to go down or is 10 mil a year your average for a healthy veteran player?

They just gave 142 (20+ per) to a LF with a career 781 OPS left fielder who is a bad fit for Fenway and probably will age poorly once his legs lose some speed. Crawfords career OPS in Fenway is 708, and he's had a relatively healthy sample there playing in the division his entire career. plus the wall in LF wont help him. pesky's pole may. for comparison, when the Cubs signed Soriano he had a career 836 ops, 50 pts higher.

that's a touch misleading, isn't it? I'm sure the Sox are terribly concerned that the 20-21 year old Crawford with the .670 OPS will show up instead of the guy that's pretty consistently been in the .800-.850 range for the last 6 years.

By the time the last 2 years of Crawford's deal are up, that 20m is probably about what a Yankees or Red Sox bench player will be making as they continue trying to outdo one another. So, if his production falls off, they can make him a 4th outfielder. :stickman:

This reminds me of this short story from The Ten:

Soriano was coming off a season where he hit 46 homers and had an OPS over 900.

Contract year. He did well for himself, he was able to fool Hendry into giving him an undeserved 8 year deal. He's been on the decline for 2 years already. Imagine how bad he will be in the future.

Yes, he was coming off a career year, which followed back to back disappointing seasons in Texas in what should have been his prime. He was also weeks away from turnings 31 and signed an 8 year deal. Crawford is still in his prime, has a better track record, is a proven quality defensive player and signed a 7 year contract for a team that spends more and consistently outperforms the Cubs.

Contract years are a myth

If Ricketts wants to pattern himeslf after Henry and co. he has a lot of work to do.

This is a good signing by a team with comparable resources to the Cubs (in theory).

Why is this a good signing?

Because they can afford it even after giving Adrian Gonzalez 160m?

Technically speaking they haven't signed Gonzalez to anything, and is still costing them only $5 million this year. Obviously they're going to try and sign him, but yeah. Crawford is the only big contract they've given out so far this year

Would be awesome if Gonzalez leaves Red Sox after next season because Red Sox doesn't have enough money to add him into the mix? I think their payroll is about the same as last year now (which was about 160 M right???) so after next season (don't know who comes off the books for Red Sox) you would have to add at least 15 M on that payroll (Gonzalez making 5 M this year and most likely 20+ M after next season)... That would put them super close to the Yankees payroll...

I think J.D. Drew is gone after this season. Which should clear enough room for them to add Prince Fielder as their DH.

JD Drew's $14m comes off the book, as well as whatever Cameron makes. And if they picked up his option then Ortiz as well. The next year Daisuke's money is gone.

It is a good addition, but an awful contract. For their fans, I imagine it will be a tremendous disappointment if the Red Sox don't win the whole thing this season.

Other than the fact that they've turned into more annoying versions of Yankees fans, why do you say that? They should be right back in there in 2012.

mmmm...this is the Red Sox and their fans we are talking about right? They have to be walking around with perpetual hard ons currently. Anything but a World Series victory after these two moves, not to mention the massive amount of talent already on the roster, would surely be a disappointment. If I was a fan, I would be disappointed. I wouldn't think all was lost for the future, but they have to be considered the favorites right now.
