This offense is just bad. It hasn't even really been remotely productive this year.

Here is every offensive score this year.

TD - 6 plays, 56 yards

FG - 4 plays, 3 yards, defense gives them the ball inside the 20

TD - 3 plays 58 yards

TD - 6 plays 74 yards

FG - 9 plays, 25 yards, defense gives them ball on Dallas 47

TD - 4 plays, 66 yards

TD - 4 plays, 44 yards

TD - Hester punt return for a TD

FG - 7 plays, 67 yards, heavily aided by penalties

FG - 7 plays, 45 yards, heavily aided by penalties

FG - 4 plays, 7 yards, defense gives them ball at Giants 29

TD - 4 plays, 38 yards, defense gives them ball at Carolina 38

TD - 1 play, 68 yards

FG - 5 plays, 17 yards, defense gives them the ball at Carolina 27

FG - 6 plays, 15 yards, defense gives them the ball at Carolina 49

FG - 4 plays, -2 yards, defense gives them the ball at Carolina 23

TD - 4 plays, 80 yards, heavily aided by penalty

FG - 7 plays, 65 yards

FG - 7 plays, 86 yards

TD - Devin Hester punt return for TD

So in the past 3 weeks, the Bears have scored a total of 20 points on drives that we took over on our side of the field. That's bad.

The most glaring thing is extended scoring drives. We've had 1 scoring drive of more than 7 plays all year. We'd had 14 of 23 scoring drives that were 5 plays or less. We are a quick strike offense. That's all we are though.

Posted
Sorry I forgot to add. We have scored just 64 points in 6 games off drives that start on our own side of the field. Our defense and special teams have set us up with 48 points this year.

I wish we'd run some basic wildcat stuff. We're not getting anything blocking 10 vs. 11. Even 2nd and 8 is a lot better than 2nd and 10 or 11.

Martz literally wants to score from any position on the field instead of setting up 3rd and reasonable.

Tice is [expletive] stupid.

Would anyone be surprised to see him fired tomorrow? Watching the tackles continually ignore blitzers to double team defensive ends :banghead:

so webb won't ever play again, right? I hope. And maniamamamaluma was a horrible signing.

right now, i'm thinking we need to give flozell adams a call. THAT desperate.

EDIT: forget it, he plays for the steelers. thought he was retired.

I also wish I had some way to screenshot all the dumb [expletive] formations Martz was using. Half the time Forte or Taylor are in the game it's blindingly obvious it's going to be a pass because of where they're lined up.

yes, I would be shocked. It would be an incredibly arrogant move for Angelo, Lovie and Martz to OK, something they could all do, but I would still be shocked.

How do you know they are so bad? Because of 2 games? 2 games with like 40 new players on the roster. 2 games without Lynch.

I've argued with you enough to know you can keep doing this for months without providing any sort of proof and without conceding even the littlest point so I'm gonna halt on discussing this anymore.

What am I supposed to concede? That you aren't a complete idiot and they aren't completely incompetent? Okay, you aren't a complete idiot and the Bears defense occasionally makes a play. But they had a really bad day against a disturbingly mediocre offense that sucks on the road and has for multiple years and they have been a bad defense for 4 years now. What else do you want me to concede?

Dammit you bastard you are sucking me back in.

They gave up 353 yards on 71 plays.....4.9 yards per play. Seattles defense gave up 307 yards on 59 plays....5.20 yards per play.

If the Bears gave up 4.9 yards per play thoughout the season, do you know where that would rank in the league? Tied for 9th in the NFL with Philly and Miami. That's a bad day? The defense is fine when they don't have to be on the field for 71 plays in a game.

Let's give John Tait a call and beg him to come back. There's no cap, offer him $10 million for the rest of the year. Hell give Rueben Brown and Fred Miller a call. I thought Fred Miller sucked....he'd be the best or 2nd best guy on the line right now.

per play?

You are making me rethink my first concession.

They never stopped seattle which is why they allowed so many plays to happen.

Being on the field for a lot of defensive plays is a consequence of not being able to stop 3rd downs and having your offense not sustain drives. In today's case it was both...Seattle was 7/12 on 3rd downs at one point, IIRC, until they started playing keep away.

Hey Mike, welcome to the Bears. I'm your new GM, Jerry. So here's the setup. I've completely ignored the offensive line for my entire 7 year tenure in Chicago. I've used like 3 picks in the top 4 rounds on offensive lineman my entire time here, and the only 1st round pick I've used on one looks like a terrific bust. Also, here is your offensive coordinator Mike Martz. He is well known for utilizing 5 and 7 step drops to throw down the field. Because of this, his QBs get sacked quite a lot. So we're asking you to make something of this line. And if you don't within the first 6 games we're gonna fire you because it will be completely your fault.

Yeah 4.9 yards per play. The best defenses in the league give up something like 4.3 yards per play. The worst this year around 6.5 yards per play.

Yeah the third down conversions by the defense were completely unacceptable, and admittedly part of the reason they were on the field for so long.

But it wasn't just 3rd down, it was also earlier in the series they had multipe situations where they could bury a very mediocre offense and didn' get the job done, whether it was turning 8 yard losses into 1 yard gains or 0 yard gains into 6 yards gains.

Yes, that is probably my biggest gripe about the bend don't break philosophy. You let teams settle into a drive and you lose TOP and field position. There were several times where it would've been nice to squeeze Seattle and get some field position.
Posted
"bend but don't break" has always seemed like a completely [expletive] phrase/mentality to me. you're basically saying "you can suck, just try not to suck hard enough to let it cost you".

It worked when every key player on the team was 26 or under. But you are counting on a bunch of 30-somethings to run all over the field and never give up a big play and occasionally make a huge play. The defense is designed to stay on the field, but 30 year olds are not.

I think the idea is

1. Not to give up big plays

2. Make it take an offense a lot of plays to get into scoring position

3. More plays = more opportunities to force a turnover

4. More plays also = more opportunities to make a big play or for the offense to commit a penalty that puts them in 2nd and long or better.

The problem is that we can't stop them on 3rd down for the last 3 years. If we don't get any turnovers, and we can't stop them on 3rd down, bend but don't break doesn't work all that well.

Posted

To be fair, we played a lot of press coverage today and we still had our usual A gap blitzes that did nothing. I don't think that qualifies as bend don't break.

For example, Carroll runs the same defensive scheme as Lovie and we couldn't get convert a 3rd down to save our lives. It's an execution problem.
