93 of 120 coaches have been at their school for 5 or less years

Pat Fitzgerald is in his 5th year at Northwestern and isn't going anywhere. Rich Rodriguez is in only his 3rd year, but the guy before him was there for a dozen. Virginia has a new guy but the man before him was there for 9. USC has a new guy but the man before him was there for 8 years. Derwood, you were wrong that every team gets a new coach every 3-5 years. Some organizations are in perpetual state of turnover. A lot of them have very stable situations. Also rans like Rutgers and Illinois have coaches with 6 and 10 years in their position.

I'm shocked that you're pushing a small comment into a full blown argument! So unlike you!

My point was that Bowden/Paterno were the exception, not the rule. Maybe 3-5 years is more like 5-7 years. Who cares? It's not 30+ years anymore. PSU's new coach will last as long as he's winning 8+ games a season and winning bowl games. As soon as there are back-to-back seasons where the coach fails that, boosters/fans will be calling for them to be replaced. PSU will be no different than every other school in that regard. THAT was my point

And you're wrong. 5-7 years is very stable for any job in America, and many college football coaches are in place for even longer. It's just a myth that there's all this crazy turnover every year and every coach is always on the hot seat. Hell a lot of the turnover is because guys use a job as a stepping stone anyway. College football is littered with long tenured head coaches. PSU may run through their next guy in a relative hurry, but probably within 2-3 hires they will have another long term guy. He won't go 30 years, but he'll be there for a very long time.

unless the team is bad, in which case he'll be run out of town.

Polar Bear?

Black Bear. Something to do with the Teddy Bear having originated in Mississippi when Roosevelt was hunting down here and didn't want to shoot a bear cub. It's lame.

ha - the Ole Miss Teddy Bears.

I don't think the job security at PSU goes beyond Paterno. Once he's done, PSU will go through a new coach every 3-5 years just like every other school

Riiiiiiight. Hey, have you ever heard of Ed DeChellis? PSU is loyal to a fault. Also see: Portland, Rene.

that's because they're not paying those people anything. Sure, if they can get some cheap upstart coach from a mid-major conference who is willing to coach for $300k/year, they'll keep him forever.

I think that's your reality. I can't see them dropping a few million on anyone, and if they do, that coach will be on an extremely short leash

So the athletic dept that just spent top dollar for wrestling, soccer, and lacrosse coaches (and soon, hockey) are on a 300k budget for the sport that actually funds the other 28?? Not happening. You've got the secong largest stadium in the country in the middle of nowhere, with rising ticket and donation prices, more stadium expansion in the future, and a rotting product on the field. Spanier and Curley aren't that reckless. The next coach will make more than the current one.

Top dollar for wrestling, soccer, and lacrosse is a tiny fraction of top dollar for football.

True, but it's a change from previous trends, and a good indicator of future moves. A school that previously only ever promoted from within or hired someone with PSU ties has done a complete 180, starting with the Coquese Washington hire for women's hoops 5 years ago.

Look, PSU is different in a way that football drives everything. When there is a bad team, the entire university and town feels it; mom and pop stores, restaurants, hotels... They all suffer. When PSU finishes in the top 10, the school sees record application levels.

And like I said before, the guy Spanier gives the ok on to replace Joe will likely be the only football coach he ever hires, and it will define his legacy. He will look at candidates beyond Bradley and Jay Paterno, thank god. He can afford Joe to have ups and downs because Joe is the best fundraiser the school will ever see. Spanier won't have that luxury once Joe is gone, and he won't be able to give a long leash to some unproven assistant. Will it be Gruden or Dungy? Most likely not. But I could see a Chris Peterson or Al Golden, for sure. Anyway, I've ranted on this too much, we will just have to see what happens the next year or two..
