I just saw the headline on ESPN that Colvin is out for the rest of the season after being impaled with a splintered bat.

The portion of the bat hit him in the upper left side of the chest. It punctured but did not stick in his chest. Doctors are taking X-rays on Colvin's chest, and there's a suture on the wound. The team said there was minimal external bleeding.

It sounds like he is going to be ok, but eventually someone is going to suffer a worse fate if MLB doesn't do something about these maple bats.

Man, that is fucked up. They gotta get rid of these maple bats. It's only a matter of time until someone is seriously injured or worse by an unnecessarily explosive bat.

I only caught this on the highlights, but sheesh. Sounded like Bob caught it right when it happened. Interesting that he was following the trajectory of the broken bat the whole way. I usually focus on the ball.

Official Presser:

CHICAGO – Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin remains in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and is expected to stay in the hospital a few more days for observation.

Tyler today released the following statement:

“I want to thank Cubs fans for their support all season, especially right now, and let everyone know that I’m doing OK,” said Colvin. “I also want to thank everyone who has helped take care of me here in Miami – the Cubs and Marlins training and medical staffs, the EMTs at the ballpark and everyone here at the hospital.

“You never want to have a season end early, and I’m disappointed that I’m not going to be able to make it through the finish line with the rest of my teammates. That being said, I couldn’t be more thankful for the Cubs organization, my teammates and the opportunity to play for Cubs fans my rookie season. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Colvin was starting to heat up again recently after having a pretty rough second half. I think his second half numbers (.246/.318/.469) probably are a little more indicative of what type of player he is than his homer happy first half. Despite the decline in overall OPS, he struck out a little less and walked a little more, while his HR rate dropped by 50% to account for the drop in SLG. He definitely reached the high end of my expectations for the year, and it's tough to figure out what to expect next year. But I think it's clear he has to be part of a 4-man outfield, and not given a starting everyday job.

MLB is investigating why Castillo's bat broke. As if maple bats breaking is something new and unheard of.

Haven't they been "investigating" the bats for 5+ years now?

Its the same team that was investigating USC.
