another well-attended game thread, i see

You know it's bad when Fred gives the play by play in one post.

Posted
33,000? I am really disappointed in the Cubs fans. The attendance should be well under 30k at this pint

It's tickets sold. Most well in advance.

I saw a couple minutes of this one and that place was empty.

Posted
Yeah I know its tickets sold, but in 2006 we bottomed out at ~27,000. But looking back at the schedule, the 27k game was the only game where the attendance was less than 30k

2006 followed 2005, which was really bad, and 2004, which was came up just short.

2010 follows 2009, which was a disappointment, and 2008, which was great.

These tickets are sold in February. In February 2006 nobody had any hope. In February 2010, some people had some hope. 2011 tickets will sell worse than 2010. The further you get from good performance the fewer tickets you will sell without a major influx in hope (free agents).

No one had any hope in 2006? Not a very scientific measurement, but a quick check through the 2006 contest thread had NSBB people predicting an average of 87 wins for the Cubs in 2006, some as high as 94 wins.

Well maybe the real dumb people.

Regardless, that team was 2 full disappointing seasons removed from a playoff appearance and coming off a sub .500 record. The excitement level was not the same as it was in February 2004 or February 2008. When the Cubs win, they sell out the next year immediately. When they struggle, they take time to sell. When they do poorly they won't sell out the next year.

When you quantify that difference in excitement level...... the difference is relatively small.........
