Weren't the interesting depth players they gave up pretty well proven to be at least decent though?

Byfuglien, in the playoffs only. Versteeg seemed to me to get worse, or at least more sloppy in his second year. Ladd was a true depth player, but hardly irreplacable. Madden wasn't much of anything. Sopel was kind of garbage. Maybe they miss Buff come playoff time and maybe they miss Ladd. But all in all I really don't think they are missing much. The young stars should be better, Bolland and Hossa should contribute more this year.

I agree with what this guy said:

There are some unusual metaphors in that SI preview

Some teams would have written off a 2005 first rounder with just three NHL games to his credit. Not the Wings, a team that slowly seasons its prospects the way an alligator marinates a deer under a submerged log.

You can put a monkey suit on a horse, but you can't make him swing from a vine.

Avs are celebrating their '96 cup team tonight. I guess it's the all-important 15th anniversary. Sort of.

easily my least favorite sports team of all time...but they were good

That's funny. If I have a 2nd favorite team, it would be the Avs. When the Blackhaws were down, I barely followed hockey, I only watched during the playoffs and I really enjoyed watching Roy, Sakic, and Forsberg play.

It's a shame the Red Wings/Avs rivalry didn't amount to much after the mid 90's. I remember toward the end of college screwing around with changes to MLB scheduling and deciding Detroit/Denver would make a good interleague rivalry based just on the bad blood between those hockey teams. I think that's when hockey peaked in terms of cultural relevance. The Sega hockey games were the best, the US mens team won the world cup, Chicago was just ending its successful run, Pittsburgh was big, Gretzky was around, the Rangers had won and Detroit and Colorado had some epic battles.

March 26th 2007 is still my all time favorite sports day ever...my teams have won championships, but never have they did what the Wings did that day. I think any Red Wing fan over the age of 25 will never forget that game.

yeah sorry...1997...I am just full of #-o the last couple of days.

it is hard to explain, but claude lemieux had been a thorn in the wings side the previous 2 playoffs seasons and then put the cherry on top with a cheap shot against kris draper in game 6 of the western conference finals. the march 26 1997 game was revenge

Yeah I definitely remember the peak of the Wings-Avs rivalry. Good times. I remember feeling jealous because the Hawks were fading, the Wings were winning Cups, and the Avs were stealing our rivals away. I also felt conflicted becuase even I hated Claude Lemieux and being a Wings hater I wasn't supposed to.

I had been focusing on the Bears season starting for so long as a way to ignore the Cubs season that it's nice to have another worthwhile one starting just as the Bears appear on the precipice of blowing a golden opportunity to surprise to the upside.

There's no way I stay awake for the whole game though.

Dish network needs to move VS to a lower tier. I'm not gonna pay another $10 a month just so I can get VS.

Was that the Osgood-Roy fight game? That was awesome. I mean, not as good as Ray Emery fighting that goon from Buffalo (Shelley?), but still pretty good.

Never mind all things Wings talk. I'm really looking forward to seeing what we really have in Turco. Hopefully a good bit of this:

And no, I don't mean blind luck, though I'll take that too.
