Colvin now on pace for 21 HR in 282 AB but still a loooooooonnnnnnng shot to hit 20 in a full season.

Yes. I don't know why you're not grasping this. It's not like I want him to fail, but it would be surprising if Colvin consistently hit 20+ HR each season as a starting OF. His success thus far this season, while a pleasant surprise, is nowhere near being proof that he'd be a 20+ HR guy every season. I have no problem with Colvin getting most of the RF starts if Fukudome is traded, but in the meantime it's simply not realistic to have him starting over the main 3 OF. You can't bench Fukudome if you expect to pull of a decent trade, Colvin definitely cannot man CF full time and a streaky Soriano is still more likely to be more beneficial to the team getting more starts than Colvin.

It is hard to grasp when you change your argument, yes. It has now gone from Colvin ever hitting 20 in a full season being a "llooooooooooooonnnng shot", to "it would be surprising if he did it consistently".

I have never even argued the point of him doing it consistently. I haven't argued whether he should get more playing time in this awkward outfield situation. I was arguing "loooooooooooong" shot for 20 when the guy is on a 40 HR pace.

I haven't changed anything. I thought we were always talking about whether he could do it consistently as a starting OF, but yes, I do also think it would be a long shot for him to hit at least 20 this year if he became a starting OF for the Cubs today. His performance in a limited role thus far this season is in no way a guarantee that he'd continue at the pace he's currently on as a starter, or even be anywhere near that pace, or even that he'll continue at this pace in the role that he's currently in. I'll be very surprised if Colvin finishes this year with 20 or more home runs, either in his current part time role or if he basically becomes a starting OF if Fukudome is traded.

Last post regarding this from me, I swear. I agree that what he's done so far is in no way a guarantee that he will hit 20 this season or beyond. I just disagree with the "long shot".

I'm all for getting Colvin as many ABs as possible, but I'm not in favor of benching the guys who are most likely to help us win this year. The trio of outfielders have been easily our best hitters this year (save for maybe Soto) and we shouldn't be benching any of them.

Kind of silly to talk about a "trio of outfielders" that doesn't include Colvin, since Colvin's got the highest OPS of them all.

I don't think it's silly not to include him when he's got nearly 100 less PAs than any other outfielder. If one of our starting OFs were bad this year, I'd be much more in favor of starting Colvin over him and seeing if he can keep the production up in a full-time role.

However, benching one of our most productive players for a guy who's had half the plate appearances (and has gotten much luckier than the rest) is not a sound strategy.

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have officially landed utilityman Jake Fox from the A's.

The exact parameters of the trade have not yet been revealed, but Connolly suspects that the A's will get a minor leaguer from Baltimore's system. Fox was designated for assignment last week after opening the season with a .214 batting average and a .264 on-base percentage over 106 plate appearances.

Andy MacPhail acquired another failed former Cubs player? Shocking

They traded Ross Wolf for him.

Orioles acquired 1B Jake Fox from the Athletics for RHP Ross Wolf.

Fox was designated for assignment by the A's last week after posting a dreadful .214/.264/.327 batting line over his first 98 at-bats. He's shown flashes of power in the past and the O's like his versatility, but he's probably not going to be relevant this year in most fantasy leagues. Ross Wolf is a 27-year-old reliever who was buried in the Orioles' farm system. Jun. 22 - 11:50 am et

I think MacPhail is certifiably insane, and his insanity manifests itself through his collecting a menagerie of failed players he was responsible for signing/acquiring/drafting

It's not all that odd for a new GM to go after players he liked in the past, but I do think MacPhail has gone to the extreme a bit here. At the same time, though, unless those guys are taking spots that legitimate prospects could have, it's worth a try.

Pie, Montanez, Fox and Hill were all either well thought of or have one or two very good skills that make them worth a shot for a team that isn't going to contend. Give them a shot, see if they can break out, and then drop them when you start getting legit talent on the roster.

I have no idea why you're lumping in Pie with all of these other rejects.

All former Cub prospects. Pie is the biggest success of the group, that's for sure.

Some of you guys think that a player HAS to hit 35-40 HRs just because of the position he plays. Its a great idea, sure, but not many teams have a 40 HR 1B, 35 HR 3B, 35 HR LF, 35 HR RF, etc...

If Colvin hits 20+ and he's cheap... then I consider him useful as a starter for these Cubs.

That's still a loooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng shot.

8 away.

You should of all people should be rooting for his playing to time to remain relatively limited and largely in his favor.

Who says I'm not? I've only ever said Colvin looks like he could hit 20+ over a full season. He's 8 away from it in limited ABs, and I think it'd be cool/funny if he were to make it interesting this year in reaching it.
