An article on ESPN.com (inside) seems to suggest that the NHL is going to go after Luongo and Hossa's contracts since they've now voided Kovalchuk's deal. I can't see how they would manage to void a contract that was signed a year ago and they supposedly investigated and allowed back then, but there are already reports they are looking into Lu's deal, and I think Hossa's deal is a bit outrageous.

Second question....as much as I love Hossa and appreciate his help in winning the Cup, would you be really that upset if the deal was voided?

Second question first, absolutely livid. Apparently there's a potential for the team to be penalized against the cap in addition to losing the player.

The article says the other deals are being investigated. But Hossa's deal is the least likely to be torn up since they are 1+ years into it and the others were just signed. It also says it is unlikely that any of the others will be vacated. The league went after this one immediately because it was the most blatant abuse of a system that nearly every team has exploited. The precedent has been set, and now they can work on rules going forward to prevent the problem.

I might have felt differently if they'd voided it early in the offseason, so the Hawks hadn't already made all their moves to get under the cap.

they aren't voiding the contract, the hawks already won the cup with hossa on the team. it would be admitting that the hawks won the cup by circumventing the cap. this little investigation is just to make sure none of these contracts are tried again.

I want to believe this. But I try not to underestimate the incompetence of Gary Bettman. Voiding Hossa's contract could be another chapter in his upcoming book "How to Destroy Any Progress the NHL Makes"

I won't believe they'll do it until I actually see it. I'd be floored. They'd be going back over a year, after a Championship was won based on that contract, and after having given tacit approval for an entire season by not acting upon it.

It would be a murderously bad decision.

They should also post on the NHL.com website that delegitimizing championships is a practice they believe in.

if they void hossa's contract they should void some of the trades of the guys we had to move to fit under the cap this year so we can get them back

There would be a long chain of events that would occur that would end up with Dominick Hasek having to unretire becaue he's back under contract with the Hawks.

can we retroactively trade belfour years before we actually did?

I call farce. I do believe that NJ knew this contract wouldn't hold up when they signed him initially. See here.

There's no way the NHL voids Hossa's. The little loophole in the CBA was a way for the large market teams to have a leg up on the smaller market teams while all abiding by the same cap. The Nashville's of the world aren't out there handing out front loaded contracts because they can't afford them. It's Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philly, etc (aka teams the NHL needs to succeed to rake in more $$$). I really think all this little "investigation" does it provide some lip service to those teams who aren't/can't afford these huge front loaded deals.

Umm...the contract has already been voided and the decision upheld by an arbitrator and all parties have publically moved on. I'm gonna say it's been voided.

Then just make it a rule that the highest and lowest annual salaries in a multi-year contract cannot be X percentage in difference.

or just make the cap hit count against the team after the player retires.

Sorry, I was referring to the Hossa deal in the 2nd paragraph.

I just think its funny that they sign these "career" contracts, which have large salary drops during years when a players talent falls off. So they are still being paid what they are worth most likely. If they retire the rest of the deal is off. I understand the fact that it's obvious they are trying to circumvent the salary cap, but I can't believe the Devils couldn't win with the argument that they are signing a contract that guarantees the player will remain a Devil for life whether he plays until 35 or 45.

The issue with that type of contract is that Kovalchuk won't be playing 17 years from now for any of it to matter. He'll have already gotten his money and he'll be in his mid 40s. Signing him "for life" isn't nearly as important as being able to average in 6 years of sub $1mil salary so that his cap hit is only $6.5mil instead of the $10-11mil that he'll be making during his prime years. What would the argument be, "We are paying him peanuts in 2026 because we want him to retire a Devil?"

Hendry agrees to a one-year deal.

[expletive] HE SHOULD BE GONE!!!

It's Jordan, not Jim. He's merely bad, not soul-swallowing.

(I know you're joking... roll with it)

i wouldn't say jordan hendry's bad, he's a career 3rd pairing guy for sure, but i bet him and boynton will be okay.
