Jose Fernandez would be a brutal pick at 9.

FYI, Stanford is playing CSUF on ESPNU right now. For Stanford, shortstop Kenny Diekroger is a potential top 10 pick next year and right fielder Austin Wilson is a potential top 10 pick in 2013.

Lefty Chris Reed is now in the game out of Stanford's pen. Reed might be there at the Cubs' 2nd round pick though he's starting get tons of helium.

Scout's top 100 draft prospects.

Well, Scout's has George Springer at 9. I still think the Cubs should go with a pitcher and preferably a college one. If Starling's there, I'm okay with that. If Archie Bradley's there, I'm okay with that. Otherwise, I'm happy with Barnes or Jungmann. Hopefully, there's a surprise and someone else falls.

As much as I love the idea of Starlings season, if they do plan on making a splash this offseason with Fielder or Pujols, wouldnt we be better off drafting a college guy rather than a guy who probably wont be ready for another 4-6 years?

No. You don't draft with the MLB team or it's needs in mind. None of the college guys we would likely take are going to be Mike Leake and jump to MLB quickly anyway.

They wont be ready immediately, but they could be ready in 2-3 years rather than 4 years-never. A lot of our college picks have some along well, Jackson, McNutt, Cashner, Flaherty to name a few, but our high school guys dont seem to pan out. Im not calling Josh Vitters a bust just yet at the age of 21, but our track record with these kids isnt great.

Yeah, but Wilken has drafted far, far fewer HS kids so you don't have a fair sample size to compare.

ETA:

2006 - Cliff Andersen, Chris Huseby, Drew Rundle, Kevin Kreier, Nate Samson (5)

2007 - Josh Vitters, Ryan Acosta (2)

2008 - Matt Cerda, Logan Watkins, Tarlandas Mitchell (3)

2009 - Austin Kirk, Wes Darvill, Blair Springfield, Sergio Burruel (4)

2010 - Reggie Golden, Ben Wells, Austin Reed, Colin Richardson, Ryan Hartman, Dustin Geiger, Brian Smith (7)

For some reason, I thought Wilken went a bit further back, at least to Pawalek. I guess the Austins are both doing pretty well as is Cerda, and you cant count out Vitters. Golden is off to a rough start, but its way to early to make a decision on him. Is Wells even pitching yet this year?

Taylor Jungmann's velocity was down to 88-91 yesterday.

Yes, Wells is at extended spring training and should be at Boise when they start their season in 2 weeks.

My gut says that they take Sonny Gray, who didnt sign for overslot a couple years back. It just seems like a no brainer to pick a polished pitcher who can move quickly given the recent dearth of pitching depth in the organization. Plus that would be a very Hendry like move to get the guy that got away.

I really dig Springer's skill set though I think he could be a fantastic compliment to brett jackson

Kyle Winkler, a RHP out of TCU, who could have snuck into the supplemental round and at worst was a very solid early second day pick, left his game today holding his elbow, taking himself out in the 1st.

With the current shape of our farm system, I really wish we were in the same position as Tampa, with 12 picks to restock the system.

Until we replace Hendry, any "improvement" to the organization is superficial and, ultimately, meaningless.

If its nothing too serious TCU could be returning a very good pitching staff next season due to injuries.

I've about had it with your broken record. We get it. You don't like Hendry.

I'm a bit confused on Starling's power. Are we talking about a 20-25 HR kind of guy if things work out, or is it really plus/plus-plus and possibly pushing 40 kind of thing if everything works out? I know it's probably tough to tell with so much projection involved...

I think given his size and strength he should be projecting as plus power. Not Harper or Stanton power though.

Levine thinks we're after Starling. Link

The picture of Starling from that article is....not inspiring.

Hahaha what a pointless article. "The draft is Monday. The Cubs may be after [a player]."

For all the talk about how unsignable he is, Kevin Goldstein said Josh Bell will be in his final mock draft. Some of the BA guys seem to think he'll get picked late 1st or supplemental round too; it doesn't sound like he'll make it to the Cubs 2nd round pick.

Don't know how true this is (this is coming from a poster who I don't know if he is legit), but from prosportsdaily forum:

Just heard: the dollar amount from a Josh Bell insider on what it will take to pry him away from Texas: 5.8M-6.2M...

So the upper limit on his bonus demands are $50,000 less than Bryce Harper's bonus last year. Good luck with that, Bell.

Personally, I think it's his way of trying to set himself up with wherever he truly wants to go. Maybe Boston? Just guessing, but they have multiple picks and no limitations whatsoever with what they spend.......

On another note, if Arizona takes Bundy, I just read that Baltimore is in on Bradley(Archie). If they take him, things could get weird. I still think Seattle takes Rendon myself, so if that's the top 4, let's say KC takes Lindor, Washington takes Bubba(which seems almost a lock at this point) leaving Arizona with their choice of Hultzen or Bauer. If they take Bauer, I doubt the Indians take Hultzen. Assuming they don't, in this scenario, is he a lock for the Cubs? I think his pricetag could play into things some, but he's probably a solid bet to be in the major league rotation by mid 2012 and I don't see why he's labeled as a potential "2". Why is he not a future "ace"? If he's there, I'd certainly hope we take him. And go ahead and give him a major league deal, to cut down some of the immediate bonus.
