I take it the Cubs are still not spending in the draft? If this is the case, why?

Golden will probably be an overslot in the second round. They might be saving their money to snag guys who fall into later rounds.

WTF was my first reaction but I guess Wilken gets a little benefit of the doubt.

Yeah. That's how I feel - I didn't like Colvin or Jackson and a lot of guys didn't like Cashner and all 3 of those first rounders have had success to this point.

I did want Sale or Castellanos.

Was Wilken responsible for Pawalek and Harvey? Just out of curiosity, what was the overall feeling about those 2 when they were drafted?

Nope. Wilken's first draft was Colvin/Samardzija.

Pawelek was lauded, especially since he signed very quickly (I think the same day he was drafted), which was unheard of for a Boras client. Harvey was also very highly rated and was considered a good pick.

No. Those were before Wilken. Both went where they were expected to (or lower in the case of Harvey) and were considered good to even great picks at the time.

Is it too early to take a flyer on Hahn?

Not at all.

Hunter Ackerman...okay then. BA has him as the 21st best player in North Carolina.

The top junior-college talent in the state, Louisburg lefty Hunter Ackerman could sneak into single-digit consideration thanks to an 88-90 mph fastball that he drives downhill. He has a solid low-80s changeup with tailing action that he can use to both sides of the plate, and a loopy, below-average breaking ball.

Yeah I remember the Cubs announcing during the first round that they had already signed Pawelek.

Fyi, his injury was forearm stiffness, which is often a precursor to TJS.

Is Cecchini still available?

Looks like it.

Between the two, I'd rather buy out Cecchini's commitment to LSU than Wilson's to Stanford. Far fewer questions with the bat for that big a price tag.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand there goes Cecchini.

Great draft for the Red Sox so far.

I am pretty pissed at this point, seeing how well the Red Sox are running things, versus what we're doing. It's got to be a monetary issue, if you ask me. The Red Sox are committed to the draft and it doesn't look like we are honestly. The Red Sox now have gotten Vitek and Brentz, who appear to be signed already for slot. There's 2.5 mill or so spent already, and then they added Ranaudo, who could get 3-4 mill himself, depending on what happens this summer. They followed it up with Brandon Workman, another top 40ish guy on basically every board I've seen. He'll probably get close to a million. Then they pick Sean Coyle, who's a tough sign from UNC, so he'll cost a pretty penny, followed by Garin Cecchini, who's also going to cost over a mill. It's VERY conceivable to think the Red Sox have spent close to 10 mill ALREADY. And they'll be extremely active come July 2nd too.

Basically, I'm jealous as hell.

Colorado just drafted NC State's QB. Heh.

The pack is doomed if he signs.

Actually, they are probably screwed either way.

I am not looking forward to Matthew Szczur's name in the minor league box scores.

Very good pick here, great speed and makeup. He plays WR for Villanova's football team.

OF Matthew Szczur Villanova. Speed guy, who offers little else, unless I'm mistaken.

Should hit for average, but yeah, his arm and power are decidedly unremarkable.

What a crappy draft so far.

What's so crappy about it? The only reach in my opinion is the first round pick. And our 2nd and 3rd round picks seem like that was the best choice left on the board.

Our first round pick wasn't on anybody's top 200 list and I don't think Golden was the best choice in the second either. I'm ok with the catcher but our 4th round pick sounds like your average soft tossing lefty and our latest pick sounds like a poor man's Sam Fuld.

I have no problems with Golden or Gibbs honestly, but there were certainly some higher ranked and more expensive guys on the board when they were took. I'm disappointed in the fact that almost all of the guys that fell are now gone and we didn't act like a big market team and scoop any of them up.

Nobody is a poor man's Sam Fuld. And Golden is high risk high reward with possible 70 out of 80 power in the future.
