The only problem is that our whole team is pretty much slumping. Take out A Ram and put in a slumping player in his place. That's the problem with our 2010 Cubs. Not a lot of options. It's just not a very good team.

This is a good point. Pointing out Hill replacing Soto is a good idea isn't.

.250 .291 .308 .599

.254 .401 .405 .806

Who do I choose...hmm? I know next to nothing about baseball compared to most people on this board and even this is easy to figure out.

The only problem with those numbers is that Soto's used to be much, much better. Considering he was hitting in the high .300's and is now at .254, it's pretty easy to say he's been slumping over the recent past without even having to look up the numbers. I'm not trying to say Koyie is better than Geo, but let's not act like Geo is Johnny Bench here.

For the month of May Soto has:

.200 .333 .329 .662

Hill has:

.160 .192 .160 .352

Both numbers are weak, but I'll take Soto any day of the week. Hill can start some days, but our team will never be better with him over Soto.

It can be better for a very short amount of time. Again, you won't find me saying Koyie should be the starting catcher on our team. But for a few days, what's the big deal? Especially since he's done well during those two days.

Not really saying it's a good idea. Just that it's not a horrible one for a couple days.

I don't want to say you are totally wrong because I hate posting something and getting made fun of. I just think that you have to play the odds. Sure, trying to go for a 20% shot of hitting your flush works every now and then...but will you make money in the long run? No. The same can be said in thinking Hill is due for a good game.

Notice that the top 3 players by OPS are bench players, and the bottom 4 are everyday regulars. The only 3 players that have shown any propensity to drive in runs, Baker, Nady, & Hill, are all bench jockeys.

Yes, there are sample size issues here, but the whole damned team is in a slump..... as evidenced by the rousing 3.48 runs per game we scored over this period and the .100 drop in team OPS.

I find it real hard to fault Lou, or any manager, for shaking this lineup up, or even turning it upside down, in the SHORT TERM. Don't confuse that in any way with a LONG TERM solution. Benching Soto in the LONG TERM is simply insane, and , as much as some here you would like to think that Lou Piniella suffers from some form of dementia, even he knows better than this. If Lou wants to platoon these guys for a while, at least until Soto gets his OPS back above Koyie Hill levels, and he will, I don't have a problem with that. If Soto were giving us that .800 OPS that some keep crowing about, fine.... but he is not.

Wait a sec. Isn't his OPS over .800? Career AND this season?

Sure it is. Which do think is the best predictor of Soto's production in the SHORT TERM ?? The first month of the season, the last month of the season, or the overall average of both ??

So the main point of this thread is that despite all the dumb [expletive] Lou has done, since he played a backup catcher over his (hopefully just)slumping, starting catcher for a few games he should be kept around? Alright then.

the full season and it's not particularly close. his performance is comparable with his career numbers and it's the most relevant number of PAs. 50 PAs isn't telling us much about what he'll do in the future.

i wasn't implying i was dreaming

To answer your question -- now that I know you weren't dreaming -- it's a real thread. In fact, you've clicked on it a few times and have posted in it at least twice.

You get what?

This thread is designed to talk about why the Cubs should keep Lou. If you don't like it or don't agree with it and find it to be a stupid thread, don't visit it. If people want to make unproductive posts in response, I should be able to make ones back. No?

Bottom line? Not everybody thinks Lou is to blame for the Cubs' woes this season.

so there can't be critical discussion in a thread? a poster says to keep lou piniella; i think other posters should be able to provide arguments that the cubs should not keep lou piniella. if you want this to be a cheerleading thread about lou then you're probably going to be the only one posting in this topic.

i don't think anybody is blaming lou. he's just making a bad team worse.

people don't criticize lou for the cubs results this season, they criticize him for his consistently awful baseball decisions

we don't need 4 posts from you and dexter about whether this thread exists. so i asked you both to drop the stupid back and forth. and no, if someone makes what you believe to be an unproductive post, you making an unproductive response isn't helping.

i'm not exactly sure why we need a separate thread to discuss keeping lou, when the thread discussing firing him would include such discussion. but i'm quite sure we don't need several posts about the existence of this thread.

now do you understand? good. let's move on.
