What made it worse for me was that (if I remember correctly), we basically didn't play hard vs the Brewers at the end of the season, and had we won that series, we'd have played the Mets in the first round as opposed to the Dodgers, whom I didn't think we matched up well against. And well, we didn't.

That's on Lou all the way. Ridiculous ...

We went 3-3 against Milwaukee at the tail end of the season, and 2 of those 3 losses were to Sheets and Sabathia(the other was tied when Dempster left, but Marshall gave up a run and Gaudin gave up 2). I'm not sure I buy that we tanked against them.

I think it is awesome that fans of other teams have to pick at the scabs of us every chance they get. Yeah we don't win it all, but every other fan that brings up the Bartman crap hates us enough that you would have thought we win it all every year.

Nah. It's more that it's just so easy to make fun of the Cubs.

Well we are pretty much the Clippers of baseball. Yet, every fan base in our division hates us. Imagine if we actually won the damn title.

I think it's overstating it a bit much to call it all "hate." Most of it is just making fun of the team/us.

It's like saying people hate the Royals or the Pirates or the Orioles because they're so easily mocked.

It's different with us, although I think it's because inspite of our ineptitude, we still have a huge following.

Never said that. What I did say is that I think you're definitely overstating how much "hatred" is out there, or incorrectly perceiving making fun of a team and its fanbase as hatred too often.

I don't think so. Other fan bases hate us. It isn't like oh man they suck, lol crap either.

Well, of course. Fans of teams like the Cardinals and White Sox and Brewers aren't going to be fond of the Cubs or their fans. I just think it's a stretch to effectively imply that the average baseball fan outside of rival fanbases hates the Cubs.

You can add Reds fans to that list as well. They HATE us.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they hate the Reds. Any Reds haters here?

I really hope they win it in Bartman's lifetime so he can get the forgiveness that he shouldn't even have to deal with.

i really hope the cubs win it in my lifetime and don't really care about how it affects some doofus who attended a baseball game 7 years ago.

At this point 2008 playoff debacle pisses me off more than 2003.

Not even close for me and three words explain it all: FIVE OUTS AWAY

See the biggest reason why 2008 stung more is because by Memorial Day we were almost on playoff cruise control (with some bumps in the way). Everyone was just kinda waiting for the postseason, and expecting great things because that was a terrific team. In 2003, the playoff race was half the battle. Remember at that point, the Cubs had made the playoffs just 1 time in the last 14 years. So making the playoffs with a team that lost 90 games the year before was a significant accomplishment. I don't think many would have hung their heads if the Cubs lost game 5 in Atlanta. It was of course very painful because we all believed we were going to do it. In 2008, we had made the postseason the year before, making the playoffs wasn't a big accomplishment for us. We all just waited several months for the playoffs to start, and when they did, the team basically flatlined and in the blink of an eye it was over.

2008 ticks me off more because the Cubs had the best record in the NL. In 2003, they were in a crappy division and had the worst record of the four playoff teams.

2003 definitely hurts more because of how close they were to making the World Series. But it doesn't tick me off because there are actually good memories from that postseason, which others have mentioned in the thread. 2008 the only highlight was DeRosa's second inning home run.

2003 hurt the most for me. We were so close. That year pretty much has me in the mindset of it will never happen. All the stars were alligned and we just blew it.

Astros fans definitely hate the Cubs. I can guarantee that. After the way the Cubs fans took over their ballpark 3 years ago and will do so again in a few weeks, I don't think the Rangers fans care too much for us either.
