Iowa:

- Iowa Cubs placed CF Brett Jackson on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to May 1, 2013. Turf toe.

- Chicago Cubs optioned 3B Ian Stewart to Iowa Cubs.

Daytona:

- Daytona Cubs activated C Taylor Davis from the 7-day disabled list.

- Daytona Cubs placed 3B Stephen Bruno on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to May 3, 2013.

From Chicago Tribune:

Ian Stewart's $2 million salary is guaranteed, but not his return to Wrigley Field. Dale Sveum made that clear. "He's down there as a Triple-A player," Sveum said. "(Luis) Valbuena and (Cody) Ransom are our third basemen. That's how it is now."

According to the twitter feed on CCO, Stewart has yet to report to Iowa since the "demotion" and hasn't been seen since Friday. I wonder if the FO has finally cut bait and is going to stick with Valbuena/Ransom.

I believe he can opt out of his contract, but would lose whatever is left on the $2 million he is owed. That would seem like a bad idea! My guess is that he is just taking the "allowable days" to make his decision of whether of not to report.

An article on Ian Stewart:

http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2013/05/04/where-oh-where-is-ian-stewart/article

Another article on Stewart:

It’s raising some eyebrows that recently optioned Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart hasn’t reported to Triple-A Iowa just yet even though he’d been playing there for the last 13 games.

“He will be, but he has his time, his 72 hours,” general manager Jed Hoyer said on Monday.

Players who have been optioned to the minors have 72 hours to report, meaning Stewart had until Monday night. He didn’t play over the weekend, apparently taking his time off. Texts to him and a call to his agent went unreturned.

Why would a player trying to get back to the major leagues take three days off when he’s been “off” since the start of the season? It’s an apparent lack of commitment.

This after the Cubs committed a non-guaranteed contract to him at the end of spring training -- which meant it was his for keeps -- for $2 million.

“We had a lot of discussions with him about it, in the end that was the decision,” Hoyer said cryptically. “He has the right, it’s the given right the players have and that was the decision.”

In a way it’s reminiscent of Stewart’s behavior last season when he failed to rehab an wrist injury with the club, choosing to go home instead. The Cubs were disappointed with that decision and Stewart regretted it in hindsight. And now he’s doing it again, although the Cubs do expect him in uniform on Tuesday when Iowa takes on Colorado Springs.

But where was he over the weekend? His absence is telling.

Some Arizona Phil notes on recent transactions:

The Cubs have released catcher Micah Gibbs, who was their 2010 3rd round draft pick out of LSU. He was a decent defensive catcher, but was hitting just 163/317/286 at Daytona this season, and for his career (208 minor league games), Gibbs hit 217/329/293.

Also, catcher Chadd Krist and infielder Wes Darvill have been moved up to Daytona from Kane County, and LHP Jeff Lorick (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K in two EXST games) has been reinstated from the DL and was moved up to Daytona from Extended Spring Training, and RHP Starlin Peralta has been sent to Extended Spring Training from Daytona.

Peralta was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Major League Phase of the December 2012 Rule 5 Draft, but was returned to the Cubs during Spring Training. He had put up an awful 12.86 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 14.0 IP at Daytona so far in 2013.

The VSL roster limit is 35, but at present the Cubs have assigned only 24 players to the VSL Cubs, with 22 of the players from Venezuela, one from Curacao, and one from the Dominican Republic. (Essentially all of the Venezuelan players who had been assigned to DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2 were moved to the VSL Cubs). The two Mexican players assigned to the Dominican Academy (RHP Javier Castro and LHP David Villegas) could be assigned to the VSL Cubs, too, as well as any Cuban or other non-Dominican international players (including no more than two players from Puerto Rico) the Cubs may sign in coming months.

There are also 11 Venezuelan players presently assigned to the Cubs Extended Spring Training team (RHP Daniel Adrian, OF Jeffrey Baez, C Erick Castillo, 2B Bryant Flete, RHP Erick Leal, 3B Mark Malave, LHP Angel Mejias, SS Carlos Penalver, C Wilfredo Petit, LHP Carlos Rodriguez, and LHP Luis Villegas) who could be moved down to the VSL Cubs, although most of the Venezuelans at EXST are likely ticketed for the AZL Cubs or Boise.

In EXST Cubs roster news, INF David Bote and C-DH Carlos Escobar have been moved up to Kane County. Bote was hitting 219/324/344 in 12 Cactus League EXST games (37 PA), with two triples, one SB (three CS), and 5/8 BB/K. He has played 2B, SS, and 3B for the EXST Cubs, and this is the second time he has been moved up to a full-season club since the end of Minor League Camp (he was with the Daytona Cubs for about a week last month when Tim Saunders was on the DL). The 20-year old Bote was the Cubs 18th round pick in the 2012 June Draft out of Neosho County CC. The Cubs 2012 15th round draft pick out of the U. of Nevada, Escobar was sidelined with an ankle injury during Minor League Camp and for the first three weeks of Extended Spring Training. But he hit 462/462/846 in five Cactus League EXST games (13 PA) since returning to action, and he hammered two home runs over a period of three days last week (one in an intrasquad game at Fitch Park, and then a tape measure shot last Saturday at Maryvale). Escobar had a 25% CS in Cactus League EXST games, and he also picked one runner off base.

The Cubs have traded AAA Iowa RHSP Drew Carpenter to the Colorado Rockies for a PTBNL or cash. Carpenter was an NRI with the Cubs in Spring Training, and had a 1-4 record with a 7.33 ERA & 1.78 WHIP at Iowa.

Per the Tribune: "Pitching in an extended spring game in poor conditions at the Brewers' Maryvale, Ariz., complex, the Cubs’ Josh Conway was lost for the season with a stress fracture in his elbow." AZPhil: Josh Conway has a cast on his right arm, from shoulder to finger-tips. Also, OF Trey Martin has his left arm immobilized in some kind of sling-contraption after undergoing left (non-throwing) shoulder surgery for chronic shoulder instability.

Clevenger hit a couple of squared-up rocket line-drives, including one that almost took Daury Torrez's head off. He certainly didn't show any ill effects from the injury, and I would think he will likely get some ABs as a DH in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games beginning sometime next week, before going out on a rehab assignment at either Tennessee or Iowa. (He isn't eligible to be reinstated from the DL until June 13th).

This leaves Daytona with just 23 players, 12 pitchers (7 relievers plus Cates/Wells/Burke/Francescon/Kirk), and 11 hitters. There will likely be a couple more bodies heading to Daytona soon.

That's pretty intriguing.

He's likely just keeping the spot warm until Rivero is ready.

Rivero is a pitcher, Rymel a catcher.

Not sure why the Smokies need 3 catchers right now, there must be some sort of injury between Lopez and Noble.
