LHP Hunter Cervenka promoted to Daytona

 

Any chance that we might have something of use with Cervenka? Theo didn't chose him from the PTBNL pool for no reason. In the past, he's had high K totals, but high walk totals as well. Since coming here, the BBs have been down and the Ks remain. We'll see how his first crack at A+ goes.

I think Cervenka's success is more a function of being a 22 year old repeating Low A. His stuff didn't look MLB caliber to me when I saw him, just no velocity and nothing particularly sharp(to my amateur eye) offspeed.

25 year major league career, 5000 hit club and inducted into the HOF while still playing. I can't get that damn article on him out of my head......Seriously though, they could keep him there as a utility guy, I would think.

If Saunders performs well and by the time Alcantara's off the DL, Baker and/ Valbuena have moved on he could stay there with Alcantara to AA and Watkins or Lake to Iowa with Cardenas back up. Watkins might be the better bet for Iowa. Fringy but somewhat intriguing as a cheap utility guy, he's Rule 5 eligible this Winter, and they might want to take a gander at him at the next level to help decide if he's worth protecting.

Explanation from Arizona Phil:

There were a series of roster moves made as the result of Daytona SS Arismendy Alcantara going on the DL.

1. Elliot Soto (who had been the back-up SS at Tennessee) was sent down to Daytona from Tennssee to be the #1 SS at Daytona.

2. Dustin Harrington (the utility INF at Daytona) was moved up to AA to be the utility INF at Tennessee.

3. Tim Saunders (who started games at 2B, SS, 3B, and CF at AZL Cubs) was promoted to Hi-A to replace Harrington as the utility INF at Daytona.

The other option would have been to move Saunders up to Peoria and utility INF Wes Darvill up to Daytona from Peoria, but despite just having signed with the Cubs, the 22-year old Saunders is more-polished and a better defensive player than Darvill, and probably better-able to handle DSL pitching, too.
