Anthony Rizzo did everything he could this spring to make the team, going 12-for-33 (.364) with two homers, but the Cubs want to see what they have first in Bryan LaHair, last year's minor league home run champion. The 22-year-old Rizzo's day will come in Wrigley.

 

Mild disappointment that Richardson and Ebinger never developed. Granted, the cuts aren't surprising, just disappointment that things didn't turn out better.

 

Ahh...Mercedes is gone. Not surprising, but....I tend to have a soft spot for players who stick it out in the minors for an extended period of time. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

A major league Article XX(B) free agent who would have received a $100,000 bonus had he reported to Triple-A Iowa, Rodrigo Lopez joined the Cubs' major league roster on Saturday, April 7, after Chicago resolved its roster situation with Luis Valbuena. They claimed the out-of-options infielder at the tail end of spring training but had to outright him to the minors in order to free up the 25-man roster spot for Lopez.

average prospect, good discipline but little in the way of offensive ability.

 

Bigger issue was that he was basically a 2nd baseman. Perhaps he could've picked up other spots in time, but there really wasn't a spot for him with DeVoss in A, Torreyes/Silva in A+, and Watkins in AA. The Torreyes addition basically jammed him out of a full-season slot in some respects. Probably will go to Indy League (was a decently respected college bat at UConn IIRC).
