I'm hoping we can have this as its own thread - it would be nice to have a somewhat comprehensive collection of transactions to look back at. Otherwise feel free to merge it with the game discussion...

Daytona:

Chris Huseby sent to Extended Spring Training (due to control problems???)

David Patton activated and assigned to Daytona

Iowa:

Jeff Gray promoted to Chicago

Ted Lilly on rehab assignment

Mark Johnson activated

Sam Fuld placed on 7-Day DL retroactive to 4/13/10

Notes:

CF Sam Fuld left the game in the fourth inning on 4/13/10. He's been bothered by soreness in the webbing of his left hand between his thumb and forefinger.

Fuld on Sunday aggravated a minor wrist injury he suffered making a catch in Los Angeles two weeks ago and is limited for now to playing defense, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

4/15/10 - Sam Fuld left this game in the fourth inning with soreness in the webbing between his fingers. He saw a hand specialist yesterday in Chicago to try to get the problem figured out.

Released: C Garrett Maines, OF Jason James

Placed on suspended list: C Luis Flores

Recalled: RHP Jeff Gray

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Justin Bristow, RHP Chris Carpenter, RHP Manolin DeLeon, RHP Marcus Hatley, RHP Dylan Johnston, RHP David Patton, LHP Casey Lambert, C Mark Johnson, 1B Rebel Ridling, 3B Scott McClain, SS Matt Matulia, OF Matt Spencer

The Cubs signed both Maines and James out of the independent Frontier League in the offseason, but neither will suit up for a Chicago affiliate this spring. James, in particular, has an interesting backstory. Drafted in consecutive years out of Kishwaukee (Ill.) JC, in ’03 and ’04, he opted to attend NAIA Lindenwood (Mo.) instead of turning pro. James signed on with the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League in July ’06 after being passed over in the draft. He then proceeded to string together four remarkable seasons in a row, batting a cumulative .355/.420/.524 in 306 games for Rockford. James' hitting exploits had some calling him the Ted Williams of the Frontier League.

Is that THE Scott McClain? How the hell did we end up with him again?

Apparently the Cubs signed him to a minor league contract, although neither cubs.com nor Baseball Reference shows such a transaction. He spent the last three years playing for Fresno (Giants' AAA team).

Purely speculating - I think the Cubs intentions for signing McClain were to use him as a player-coach. They used Matt Matulia that way last year, keeping him on the DL until they needed another body on the roster. I assumed Jason Dubois was signed for that role as well, but he is active and it looks like the Cubs need his power in the lineup. Arizona Phil thought the same might be true about Jose Contreras and Mario Mercedes as well.

The Cubs' media guide confirms that Die Hard did indeed sign a minor league contract with the Cubs in January, and he is included with the minor league players in the guide. I'm not sure why cubs.com doesn't show that, since the transaction list there usually includes minor league signings. Given his age (I can't remember whether it's 37 or 38) Wrigley Rat's speculation makes sense to me; at that age I doubt that he was signed as a potential major league callup.

Tennessee:

Tennessee Smokies activated RHP Christopher Carpenter from the 7-Day disabled list.

Marcos Mateo assigned to Iowa Cubs from Tennessee Smokies.

Daytona:

Daytona Cubs placed LHP Christopher Rusin on the 7-Day disabled list.

Matthew Spencer assigned to Daytona Cubs from Tennessee Smokies.

Peoria:

LHP Ted Lilly assigned to Peoria Chiefs (on rehab assignment).

Notes:

Chris Rusin (0-2) started and recorded only one out before suffering an ankle injury.

After giving up three singles to start the game, the left-hander, who lost his opening start last weekend, injured his left ankle after a one-out come-backer off the bat of Dunedin's Mike McDade. Rusin was turning to run and back up home plate when he twisted his ankle. For his efforts, Rusin got the loss, two earned runs in just one-third of an inning, and a bag of ice for the ankle. Later, sporting crutches and an Ace bandage, he summed it all up in one word: "Frustrating."

Spencer (broken toe) has completed his rehab and is en route to Daytona, where he will play until the Cubs can open up a roster slot for him at AA Tennessee.

dammit what's wrong with nagel now

here's a *little* more info from Nate's notes of 4/20:

April 17: LH James Leverton added from Extended Spring Training; RH Jonathan Nagel placed on disabled list (right arm stiffness)

Those game notes are great - is there any way to link those here at NSBB? I like how it gives us each pitcher's repertoire. Thanks Karen.

They're posted daily on Peoria and Iowa's web sites. I'll post them with the probable starters if they're available by then.

Great to hear about Suarez. He was the last cut from Peoria's pitching staff coming out of Mesa. He'll probably be pitching out of the pen for Peoria.

Good to see DJ Fitzgerald coming up after he had success in last season.

Jovan Rosa was released, with Jon Mota going up to Peoria as a 2nd catcher.

Boy, catching sure is a weak spot in the organization right now. Although I half-wonder if Chirinos is a late bloomer.

In addition to the above transactions, Ryne White was also released from Daytona today.

That was the corresponding move to Rebel Ridling coming off the DL.
