I was thinking that he was lost as a rule5 pick but baseball reference http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcgehca01.shtml#trans says he was waived. Either way, I'm curious to see what everyone thinks of the guy. He had an excellent 2009 and has started off well this year. Did he figure something out or was this a case of poor player development? At 27 he's not young in prospect terms but would look pretty good at second base right about now.

If you look at his MiLB stats, he projected to maybe make it as a bench player... maybe. Low OBP, middling SLG leading to a mid to low .700 OPS. They might have missed judged him, but he really wasn't looking like he'd turn out as he has.

Casey McGehee is pretty bad, his first half season of playing time isn't as telling as his near 3000 PA's in the minors.

i don't think he's good but who knows, maybe he got laser eye surgery or made some big adjustment to his swing to become a better hitter. his performance last year was legitimate - not a lot of luck involved. it's possible that he'll cool off and/or the league will figure him out, but it's also possible that he just made a breakthrough.

Could it be that the Brewers knew something about his game that the Cubs didn't see though?

It seems possible that you could see a guy and realize a tweak he needs to make. If the other club doesn't understand what needs to be done, it could make for a decent, cheap risk to take.

I'm not sure if scouts really do this or not though. Feels like it could just be a fluke, but I guess we won't know until a little more time passes.

You know who else put up an .850+ OPS in their first 450+ PA's? Mike Fontenot. Except Fontenot actually hit in the minor leagues.

It's not like he would necessarily stop being a fluke even if he keeps having success.

True. I meant it still feels like he'll drop back down.

Brewers fans are in love with him. I kept telling my co-workers that it was all luck last year, but now he's playing well this year too. He seems like a nice enough guy so I'm actually pulling for him when he's not playing the Cubs.

I'm mostly bitter that he wound up on a rival team without us having any idea he might produce, even if it is for 450 ABs.

Could certainly have used him last year when Ram went down.
