So beyond Lee, Watkins and maybe Antigua are there any other players worth keeping an eye on? Surprised the Kirk or Raley didn't show up on the roster.

Jung, Whitenack, and Beliveau have some potential. Cerda is also someone to keep an eye on. It'll be interesting to see where he plays, he's the 3rd best IF prospect here but will never be a MLB 3B.

kirk i'm not surprised because he is less than a year out of high school, but i would've thought that raley would play full-season ball.

Raley was in Daytona camp a couple days ago, maybe he's sticking there.

I'm thinking Antigua, Jung, Morla, Nagel and Whitenack are in the rotation though it really doesn't matter since they piggyback a lot at Peoria.

I'd have to guess Raley is in Daytona's rotation.

For all the talk about our minors being very strong at the lower levels...this roster is underwhelming.

I kind of agree, although if Kirk is the last pitcher added, it'd make the list quite a bit more intriguing. That said, I'll be looking very hard at 6 guys that are here. Lee, Watkins, Cerda, McNutt, Jung, and Antigua. I think that Lee can make a HUGE leap onto people's radars this year personally. Possibly even into the overall top 50 or so next year. Watkins is a guy that I'm not as high as BA is on him anyway, but he's certainly got potential(although with Castro and Lee, I figure he'll eventually wind up in CF or as trade bait) and could be an eventual top of the order type. McNutt was overslotted some and appears to be a steal for us at this point anyway. It wouldn't shock me to see him in Daytona quicker than any of the rest of these guys actually. Antigua is the only one I could see beat him there. If he continues to pitch to the results he's gotten so far, he'll start to make some waves too, I would think. Even if his stuff doesn't necessarily overpower people. Since we gave Jung over 500,000K, hopefully he starts to show why that was the case this year. Cerda doesn't appear to have a spot either, but his pedigree is worth us looking at him hard this year.

The other guys I'm curious about anyway are Ronny Morla, since the writeups we saw on him coming from Oakland, made it sound like he's got some nice upside. It'd be great if he had a Chris Archer type year for us. Jesus Morelli was looked upon by some us as very interesting coming off his Dominican season in 2008, maybe he finds some power this year possibly? Nicholas Struck isn't someone I know much about, but it seems like we overslotted him, unless I'm mistaken......If so, he's at least worth keeping an eye on. Jose Valdez is the fastest guy in the organization, so while he doesn't seem to have much going for him other than that, he's at least worth paying attention to I guess. Robert Whitenack gets his first season of full season ball too, so he's going to be the last guy I'm following out of this group......

really? Our beat writer and I were just talking about how stacked this roster looks on paper with seven players who have been ranked in top 30 before. I dont know if he can actually catch, but Rosa is the best hitting catcher we have had here since Daric Barton. Then you have Lee/Watkins very solid up the middle can hit and have speed. A speed demon in center with Valdez. Two big power guys in Bour/Jones. Ramirez's bat intrigues me in a corner OF.

Then you have McNutt, Antigua and Jung to start with on the roster. Whitenack is intriguing with his knuckle-curve and Latham was unhittable here in 2008 though no one has any clue what the year layoff will do to his stuff. Looks like Morla is ready to break out.

Im nearly as excited about this team as I was last year even though we clearly had bigger names last season. I think this team is going to score some runs and be fun to watch. Just have to pitch it and play defense. Should be fun to see.

And yes I think you will see Raley on Daytona's roster. Not sure about Kirk.

And the article I posted the link to above said that there is still one pitcher yet to be added. My guess is it could be Raley or someone else from Daytona who gets moved down.

That was kind of what I was guessing too. Maybe Beliveau? We only piggybacked two of the five slots last season and that was because Archer couldn't get through five innings under 80 pitches and Shafer was injured. Will be interesting to chat with Casey and Rosario tomorrow and see what the plan is.

Could be. I'm guessing maybe Suarez...or Raley/Rusin. I bet its a bullpen guy though since it will be someone who is joining us the day before we leave for Clinton. Find out Wednesday I guess!

Don't get me wrong...I think it's a great minor league roster that will win lots of games.

I just don't see a tremendous number of pro prospects there.

Yeah, I think there's a huge difference between what's interesting to us as Cubs fans versus what is interesting to Peoria winning. Rohan, Bour, Jones, Rosa, those guys could contribute a lot to a winning Peoria team, without seeming strongly likely to ever contribute to a winning Cubs team. Always hard to predict.

The pitching staff is the bigger question. That extra pitcher could be at either end; if it's Rhee or Raley getting sent back from Daytona, that could be the best pitcher and biggest name on the staff. More likely it's somebody for the back of the bullpen who won't change the landscape that much.

My guesses for relief versus rotation:

Sure relief: Jordan Latham
 Jeffrey Beliveau
 Steve Grife
 Corey Martin

 Andres Quezada

Sure rotation: Jeffry Antigua
 Trey McNutt

Five other rotation candidates: Nick Struck
 Su-Min Jung
Ronny Morla Robert Whitenack Jon Nagel

Nagel being older and not having shown that well, I'd prefer he was just a roster filler. Struck being a superslot novelty, I hope he's shown enough that he's a rotation guy and a good one. I'd rather have the new unknown come in looking good than look at Nagel.

Jung, Morla, and Whitenack, any of them might start and perhaps be pretty good, with some improvement. And I imagine any of them could be relegated to bullpen if they haven't shown some improvement.

Nowhere does status change faster than Peoria. Nobody is in their rotation without the perceived chance to blossom into something good. But I have hopes for all of them in March, when we have very little scouting; by end of May it's usually evident that some don't have the stuff.

Rusin has been working with the Tennessee squad in Mesa so I'd be really surprised if he drops two levels.

I missed McNutt the first time I read the roster...I think he will make the rotation even if he's eventually a bullpen candidate.

I figure we can use this for all the minor league teams, not just the Chiefs:

The Trib[/url]"]With Darwin Barney at Iowa, the Cubs are starting top prospect Starlin Castro at Double-A Tennessee. Castro hit .429 this spring and is likely to be called up if Ryan Theriot gets injured.

According to AZ Phil's latest roster report, Rusin is with Daytona and so is Raley. Rhee too, for that matter. Kirk is in extended spring training. From what it looks like, the only guy we have skipping a level this year is Flaherty.

Phil also said Peoria's last pitcher would be either Raley moving down or Mincone moving up.

By the way, Daytona's staff is LOADED. Archer, Searle, Dolis, Shafer, Rhee, Rusin, and Raley right now all on the staff, as far as guys who could be starting. Beliveau and Huseby are there too, but I'd think that they'd definitely be in the pen. No idea who would be moved to the pen, but my guess would be Dolis and Shafer, I guess?

I'd love for it to be Mincone moving up rather than Raley moving down but given the logjam of arms at Daytona, it might be better to see Raley down at Peoria. Plus, if he's not hurt too badly, Bristow will be at Daytona soon enough.

Archer, Rhee and Rusin would be rotation locks, imo. Raley too if he's there. Hopefully Dolis gets starter innings because he needs as many innings as he can get. I'm on a Blackberry so I can't check TCR but what about Alberto Cabrera at Daytona? When I saw him at Mesa, he was dealing and AZ Phil made it seem like that was the norm for him this spring.

It's a shame guys like Kirk, possibly Mincone, Suarez, Rosario, etc couldn't make Peoria.

thanks, that's really interesting. Great to hear that Mincone has impressed. I was really interested at first, but then he hurt his arm and I wondered if he was cooked already. That he's pitching, and well enough to impress, is tremendously encouraging to me.

I'm disappointed that rusin got bumped down. Tenn doesn't seem too crowded rotation wise, with him gone and with both patton and Carpenter on DL. The Rusin drop-down does really clutter Daytona, though.

Not sure I quite get Phil's note that Peoria will either get Raley or Mincone. At present, each roster has at least one lefty rotation candidate: Mathes, Papelbon, Raley/Rusin, and Antigua. For lefty relievers, neither A-squad has more than one, if I'm reading it right (Beliveau, Leverton, Buchter/Siegfried/sommer/Sasses, Gaube/Maine). If Raley goes down, I would hope he'd be used in rotation, so that would still leave Peoria with only one lefty reliever.

Perhaps they just try to have at least 3 lefties regardless? So if they drop Raley to Peoria Peoria would have three; then if they dropped one of the Siegfried/Sommer/Sasser/Buchter bunch, Daytona would repalce Rusin as their 3rd lefty?
