New Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts says he will continue to let general manager Jim Hendry run all aspects of baseball operations -- including any decisions regarding manager Lou Piniella's future beyond this season.

Ricketts also said Thursday that money should be available if Hendry and Piniella want to add players as the trade deadline approaches.

He said he likes this year's team and can't wait for his first home opener as owner. A lifelong Cubs fan, Ricketts will be in Atlanta for Monday's season opener but wishes he could "fast forward" to the April 12 game at Wrigley Field.

"I'm so excited for that day," he said. "The team's looking so good and there's such a positive energy around everything in the clubhouse. As long as we stay healthy, I don't see why we're not going to bring back the playoffs. It'd be nice to get off to a good start and keep all this positive energy going."

With this team, in this market, there should never be any question whether money will be available.

But I'm glad Ricketts isn't saying there won't be.

He's a first year owner, he's not going to say "if we have a chance to make a move for make a playoff run, we won't because we are out of money." Edited by C.C.

Did he really say that, because what I read was that he more or less danced around that topic saying something about "we'll evaluate".

This is the quote I read addressing that:

Ricketts said he'll hear Hendry out if the GM wants to make midseason additions.

"We'll keep an eye on that," he said. "Obviously, things change between Opening Day and midseason so if there are needs, I think we'll be able to address them."

In the BCB interview with him he said that there would be money available, but then I think the number of 9 million was thrown at Tom and he kind of shot it down FWIW. I think that's what it was, i'm too lazy to go look it up again.

He was talking in terms of real dollars in that spot though. Kenney pointed out that 9 million in those terms is adding an 18 million dollar player. So if he's thinking that way I don't think it would be terribly difficult to add salary.

Deciding Lou's future doesn't necessarily mean Hendry is here long term since any decision regarding Lou will come up this year.

Yeah, but much like letting Mark Hatley draft the month before he was set to leave the team, it doesn't make much sense to a let a GM decide the manager situation if he could be gone soon. Then you hire a new GM who inevitably spends a couple years trying to "get on the same page" as the manager before firing him and getting "his guy" in there.

So then I guess this means Hendry staying on wasn't just a one year thing, then?

Long term Hendry was not what I was hoping for when Ricketts bought the team.

He's not going to say anything else before his 1st season starts. If the cubs don't at least contend this season he is gone.

Agreed. I'm not sure what people are expecting. Declarations of jobs on the line?

Is there a way we can get half a team again at the trade deadline, a la 2003 when we got half the Pirates?

Seriously though, if the Cubs are in contention, I see a big name or two coming over. Just a feeling.

I have a gut feeling that Vitters will be in the Cubs organization for half of this year. Likewise for one of Jay Jackson, Chris Carpenter, Cashner.

That's funny, b/c I have the same feeling about Lee, Aramis, Lilly, and perhaps Big Z. Surely both feelings can't be true?

The Cubs could not get passed all of the No Trade Clauses to dump all of those guys. I agree about Vitters and some of our other prospects, I hope some low level guys step it up throughout the year.
