I wonder if he got the nose candy from Josh Hamilton.

It was the middle of last season. Wasn't Hamilton busted in the middle of last year?

Hamilton's relapse was revealed mid-season last year, however, the actual relapse took place prior to the 2009 season.

This can't be right. Karl Ravech just said on BBTN that players aren't tested for recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine per the current collective bargaining agreement. That seems a bit odd to me, no?

Absolutely correct. Testing is only allowed if there is suspicion.

This is pulled directly from the Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program (page 9).

"B. Drugs of Abuse

Except as set forth in Section 3.A or Section 5.B (as to Stimulants) or Section 3.C or Section 4.E, Players shall not be subject to testing for the use of any Drug of Abuse.

C. Reasonable Cause Testing

In the event that either Party has information that gives it reasonable cause to believe that a Player has, in the previous 12-month period, engaged in the use, possession, sale or distribution of a Prohibited Substance, the Party shall provide the other Party, either orally or in writing, with a description of its information (“Reasonable Cause Notification”), and the Player will be subject to immediate testing or a program of testing, as determined by the IPA, to commence no later than 48 hours after the Reasonable Cause Notification was provided. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a Party receiving Reasonable Cause Notification disputes the existence of reasonable cause, that Party shall have the right to commence a proceeding before the Panel Chair, as defined in Article XI(A)(9), within 48 hours after receipt of the Reasonable Cause Notification, and the Panel Chair will determine whether reasonable cause exists to subject the Player to testing. No reasonable cause testing of the Player will occur until the completion of the proceeding before the Panel Chair. The proceeding before the Panel Chair may be conducted by conference call at the request of either Party, and shall be completed within 48 hours from the time the Panel Chair was notified of the existence of the dispute. The Panel Chair shall issue his decision within 24 hours of the completion of the proceeding, and if the Panel Chair finds reasonable cause to exist, the testing or testing program, as determined by the IPA, shall commence within 48 hours of his decision.

I did not know that. Would say that the recreational drug usage is relatively high among players in MLB, knowing that they aren't tested for it without suspicion/prior positive tests? I would.

i can get a young guy doing coke and writing it off as a youthful mistake, but what's a guy in his late 50s doing snorting coke? and who's he doing it with?

And I highly doubt he only did it once, as he said he did.

I sure hope not. why would mlb waste time and money testing players for recreational drugs?

I am pretty sure that managers are at will employees and are not covered by the collective bargaining agreement

Right.

Snorting it far more than once.

And count me as not surprised that MLB's thinnest manager does cocaine

I like how he apparently offered to resign right after taking the test... so the results weren't even processed yet and he admitted to it, and then the Rangers brass believes it was a one time thing?

"Hey I just got tested, and I just wanna tell you it's gonna turn up positive for cocaine."

"How do you know? The results haven't come back yet."

"Well, I just so happened to have snorted some the other day"

"But it was just once right?"

"Yeah, sure"

"Okay, we believe you, Mr. Pleading-guilty-before-being-convicted"

If you can randomly test someone at any given point during the season and they immediately admit to it, chances are it wasn't a one time thing. Rangers are just playing dumb and being nice.

I'm confused as to what Washington did wrong by admitting to it before the tests came in?

The ESPN article said that he told the team he used cocaine before he was tested but after he knew he was going to be, although it seems like it must just be terrible writing.

My pathetic attempt at humor was targeted more toward Rangers brass for buying into the fact that they believe this to be a one time only usage and not something he was probably doing for months on end on and off

Please dont say he did it with Marlon Byrd and Rudy Jaramillo......................

Marlon Byrd is probably the last person I'd suspect to do coke. HE IS SO HUGE. It keeps blowing my mind every time i see him on TV, when anyone mentions him I think about "6' 245"

and how absurd it is that he can play a decent CF while being so ridiculously huge. I can't really think of another non-football athlete of that size, and there are few football players that size anyway because 6-0 is pretty short for a guy that weight. Some FB/LBs, I guess, but most are going to be a couple inches taller to be pushing 250. Marlon Byrd is a guy I am really rooting for this season just because he is so hilariously shaped and seems humorous.

As to Ron W.- I love his answer when asked if he did illegal drugs any other times last year- "the drug we're talking about, no"

I've lived in Dallas and believe me, you gotta have some weed to make it through a summer in that sprawling suburban oven.
