I don't think anyone thinks he'll be as good as last year, but can he come close? If he kept his ERA around 4 and his peripherals decent, I'd be pretty happy. To me, he is the most interesting question mark on the team.

I'm setting my expectations on the lower side to keep my disappointment low. I'd love for him to do better but if he can give us Jason Marquis numbers (4.50 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) I'll live with it.

Here's Wells last year against some projections for this year:

          FIP K/BB HR/9 WHIP

2009 3.88 2.26 0.76 1.28

James 4.10 2.45 0.96 1.35

CHONE 4.27 2.20 1.06 1.41

Marcel 4.12 2.12 0.84 1.29

Projecting some regression across the board, but nothing extremely harsh. Considering his stuff played very well last year(only Brett Anderson, Dempster, and Greinke had better sliders according to pitch value), I think we can expect the projections to be accurate. Considering how new he is to pitching, I wouldn't be stunned if he was able to keep up his performance from last year either.

Those look reasonable. The innings jump last year is a minor concern as well which might lead to a little tired arm at some point which might make him slide a little bit higher but I doubt it is much higher.

I say at least 12 wins, I don't think he will lose anything he had from last year. He should be consistent

And you think wins are what will tell us that?

What I expect/hoping for: 185-200 IP, 3.75-4.00 ERA, 1.30-1.45 WHIP, 14 Wins (if you want to guess that)

What's more likely: 190IP, ERA in the low-mid 4's, WHIP at 1.5 +/- .05 points.

He'll be average to above average, which is cool. I think what's more important honestly is that he's consistent, and stays healthy. The rotation is obviously pretty volatile right now, and being a solid back end starter will immensely help this team.
