I think I counted up ten teenagers who were drafted and got 6-figure bonuses. And not counting Silva and Cabeza, who are in their 20's, the eleven 6-figure Internationals means they added 21 teenage 6-figure signees.

That is a load of new young prospects. I can't ever remember adding that many teenagers who were interesting. It could be a different world in Mesa/Boise over the next few years.

A catcher from South Korea signed with Oakland today for 510,000. Evidently has very solid power potential. Hope we find a way to add the Boras client from there sometime this year. Don't want to lose our stronghold over there.

Who is that and for how much are some expecting him to sign for?

It's a right handed pitcher that played on the same team as Yeoung Jin Kim did. No rumors about bonus demands that I know of. Just figured that since he's a Boras client, he's going to command quite a bit.

To my knowledge, the only thing out there on him is he throws a low to mid 90's FB and has solid endurance. No mention of any teams being connected to him either that I know of.

In the story about Seong-Min Kim signing with the A's, Ben Badler mentioned that Jin-Young Kim was the only Korean to sign with an MLB team in 2010. Must have been a real down year in Korea.

Cubswin11, the player davell is talking about is Sung-Hyuk Han.

Got it thanks. I google searched his name and I found this. It can't hurt we signed one of his teammates already.

Scott Boras is going further and younger.

The super agent has reportedly signed a contract with 17-year-old high school pitcher Han Sung-hyuk, according to the Korea Times.

The right-handed Duksoo High School senior with a low-to-mid 90s fastball, graduates early next year and his father Han Jang-suk said he would authorize the Boras Corporation to negotiate with Major League teams.

"The fact that the Boras Corporation is systematically organized in terms of marketing, promotion and rehabilitation led me to think the agency would be beneficial for my son's future career," said Han Jang-suk.

The young hurler received the pitcher's award after notching a 0.69 ERA in the 2009 President's Cup National High School Baseball Championship.

"Han has strong heart with endurance and can throw long-balls without getting tired," his high school coach Min Dong-geun said. "As he gets along with others very well, I think he will adjust to the league just fine."

One of Han's teammates, Kim Jin-young, signed a deal with the Chicago Cubs in March.

And I have no idea what the quote about him being able to "throw long-balls without getting tired" means??? I am guessing it's a translation error and means he's able to go deep into games and throw a lot of pitches without getting tired.

Here is a link to a Jin-Young Kim story posted last month. The most interesting part of the article is the comment section:

The Korean idea for a person's age is new to me.

This one made my eyes bleed from the first sentence.

The Chicago Cubs continue to dominant the Far East international free agent market.

Thanks for the head's up; it has been corrected. Can't have typos in year old articles making folks' eyes bleed.

Interesting to read the article and see that last year one of Kim's friends correctly stated the signing bonus as $850K instead of the reported $1.2MM. I think it was recently confirmed that it was in fact $850K. Any idea of why the Cubs would report it is as higher?

It may include a provision under which the Cubs will pay for him to attend college.

BA's top 20 DSL/VSL prospect has 1 Cub. The list is in alphabetical order:

Gioskar Amaya, ss, Cubs

Age: 18. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 5-11. Wt.: 175. Signed: Dominican Republic, 2009.

The Cubs field two teams in the DSL, and one of them finished with the league's best record last year. The Cubs brought a handful of promising young players from their DSL club to instructional league last fall, including Willson Contreras, an offensive-oriented third baseman, and righthanders Starlin Peralta and Amaury Paulino, both of whom can hit 93 mph. The Cubs had a talented middle infield in the DSL with Amaya and Marco Hernandez splitting time at shortstop at second base. While Hernandez has an athletic frame and good bat speed, Amaya also has good tools and more advanced feel for the game. Amaya is a good hitter who can take his stroke to game situations because he controls the strike zone well. He has a strong lower half, makes a lot of contact and creates some loft in his swing with gap power. Amaya isn't a premium quick-twitch athlete, but he runs well and has a high baseball IQ, showing good hands, solid feet and a solid arm in the field.
