Typical of a no-class organization.

if aparicio doesn't care then why should anyone else?

Of course he cares. But what's he gonna say?

"Hey, I don't want to you to un-retire my number," "I think the Sox are disrespecting me by un-retiring my number," or something along those lines would be my first guess.

Are you naive enough to believe that they did not talk about it and agree to their statement beforehand? Retiring a players # is the highest honor a team can bestow on a retired player, ergo the biggest slight to take it away...Luis has to be hurt and dissapointed.

In SOME way the Sox made it worth his while to pretend otherwise.

that, or he's flattered that a fellow countryman and possible future hall of famer wants to wear that number in tribute to him.

Really?!?!

I must have missed some part of Vizquel's career that projects him as a future HOFer. That term is thrown own way too liberally, IMO.

2700 hits, 11 Gold Gloves, career numbers that stack up very favorably to Aparicio, O. Smith, and Maranville (all HoFers)...

If Ozzie Smith's in the Hall, I think you've got to put Vizquel in there.

Now, if you wanna argue that Smith doesn't belong in the Hall either... Well, you might have a point there...

Actually Luis told me he's cool with it.

i wouldn't vote him in. but he was an excellent defender for many years, and he seems like the perfect type that the baseball writers would love to put him, especially to stick it to the guys who were hitting home runs in the steroid era.

Omar Vizquel is going to be compared to Ozzie Smith when being considered fro the HOF, it's inevitable. For that reason alone he will get in because

a) He was widely regarded as one of the best defensive SS of all time along with Smith, and the best defensive SS of this era

and

b) His overall offensive numbers trump Ozzie Smith's. Take away Vizquel's last two seasons and compare his first 19 years to Smith's total 19 year career, and Vizquel has more/higher: hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, rbi, AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS. He also made 100 fewer errors, though you can also chalk that up to a lesser range, but even with a lower range factor to still make 100 fewer errors is still a huge number.

Done. Might not be a first ballot, but he'll make it easily. If Smith can get in with anemic numbers and great defense, surely Vizquel can get in with the same while trumping Smith's offense.

As for the un-retiring of the number thing... who cares? It's the White Sox

He also played in a much better offensive environment than Smith did. Smith was also a great base stealer, stealing nearly 200 more bases than Vizquel while getting caught stealing less than Omar.

It shouldn't have gotten to the point of asking Aparicio's permission. The Sox organization should have said no , retired is retired.

Especially for a guy who hasn't played a game in a White Sox uni.

And really, Ozzie should have given up his number, he's supposed to be a player's manager.
