I actually prefer the games on CSN now only because of the pre- and post-game shows that are virtually non-existant on WGN. My only concern is that Dish Network has limited RSN bandwidth and they occasionally don't show the CSN games in HD, especially if they are on CSN+. In other words, more games on CSN probably means less games in HD for me.

How realistic is it for the Cubs to ever end up with a YES-type channel?

Wasn't it already announced at the Cubs Convention?

Don't know if it was announced at the convention (wasn't there and didn't read a whole lot about it) but ever since it was known the Cubs were being sold and through the whole process with the Ricketts, it has rumored that the Cubs were interested/looking into starting up a YES type network.

Yeah, it's been mentioned by the Ricketts a couple times but I'm wondering how likely it is that it actually occurs.

How long are the Cubs signed to be on Comcast, WGN and WCIU?

Finally, the Cubs are coming around. Time to start giving the low middle class people the shaft!

wait. that's me. crap.

There's no way on earth I could afford the EI package, let alone me getting my wife to say OK on that (plus, I just have standard cable, and I don't think there are any options available for me on that).

Let's see, the only channel I get that carries Cubs games is WGN. I live in the Cubs' "home territory," so buying MLB.tv would be worthless because all the Cubs games would be blacked out. Why must I get screwed out of watching the games?

I don't understand how it's so complicated to find the areas in the Cubs' home territory that don't get CSN Chicago and take them out of the blackout zone.

The problem is probably that some carriers in the zone choose not to carry CSN/CSN+ but have the option to. Difficult for MLB to adjust the boundaries of the zone based on cable lineups, and impossible when you have a situation where, say, DirecTV carries it and Comcast does not.

They should just bury the "zones" out back with the analog TV's and realize that we're 10 years into the 21st century and their way of doing business is terribly outdated. It's an embarrassment that people paying a few hundred bucks on EI or mlb.tv are being told they can't watch certain games that they're paying for

Yeah, that too.

I can understand it for FOX games (not like it, but understand it), because that can actually hurt individual local stations that need the ad revenue if they don't get the eyeballs. But I fail to see who gets hurt by offering cable games through that service because much of the revenue comes from cable companies anyway. It would help a lot more people than it hurt if they killed those blackouts.

I live in Iowa, and every year I have a Cubs Opening Day party with 15 or so of my best friends. I hear this year the opening game is going to be on WCIU. Why would they do something like that?

You can send out the invites if you get ESPN. The Cubs are expected to be part of ESPN's Opening Day package; they just haven't officially announced it yet.

Larz of ChicagolandRadioandMedia.com wrote about blog about this the other day in regards to less games on WGN, and the Cubs getting their own network in the coming years.

Afterwards, you'll have to checkout the message board for other reactions. Bruce Levin also wrote a blurb about the Cubs future in TV over at ESPNChicago.com.

Sad: I remember back in the '70s one summer I was on the couch all summer with a broken leg and WGN televised like 158 games.

I wonder if the next generation of Cub fans will be mainly regionalized. With games on WGN slowly going away I see fewer and fewer kids taking an interest in the Cubs outside of the 5 hour radius of Chicago. Truly sad.

Probably not too much of a drop. It might be as huge as it was when both WGN and the number of Cubs' games they showed were at their national peak, but Chicago is still a major city and you have a ton of established Cubs fans out there that are going to pass that on to their kids if they haven't already. Between being able to watch them on their own network and listening to the games through things like satellite radio, you're not likely to see too huge a dropoff in terms of the Cubs being a national team.
