I wouldn't mind Spilborghs as a replacement for Johnson, and I wouldn't mind Calero, but in no circumstances do I want Contreras.

I agree on Spilborghs, and Hendry will probably find a way to pay Calero 6-7M over 2 years. If he signs Podsednik I probably won't be watching much Cubs baseball next year anyway.

Spilborghs might be an interesting CF option if he came cheap enough. Decent offense the last few years (save last year) and slightly below average defensively in center.

Most of the recent reports I've heard stated that Hendry wasn't thrilled with the current free agents, hence the possibilities of trades like Ellsbury and Fernando Perez. Wonder if Levine is accurate about Byrd and Podsednik being on the top of his list? I hope not.

I guess I'd take Contreras at a really cheap contract, but I'm not thrilled about the idea. He's been ok, but he's also 40.

More like 40ish. And unless it's a minor league contract, I don't want nothing to do with Jose.

I'm thinking 1-year, $1-2 million contract. Unlikely, but that's about the only contract I'd agree to.

I feel like he's just rehashing info we already have heard. It's nice to know JH is at least exploring the trade market.

Yeah, that's what I figured. If he really wanted one of those two, I imagine he'd be going harder after them.

8:30pm: A report from ChicagoBreakingSports.com notes that recent acquisition Carlos Silva will likely fill the role of long reliever for the club, making Contreras an unlikely fit in Chicago. Furthermore, the 38-year-old will likely attract better offers from teams that see him as a starter.

No Silva in the rotation is fantastic news.

Agreed, his best chance to be productive for us this year (or at least harm us the least) is to be a long-man or a MR that pitches in mop up duty. Maybe being in the bullpen will allow him to focus on just throwing 2-3 pitches and being a somewhat competent pitcher.

maybe its just me but when i read that we were interested in Contreras, I immediately thought Ardolis Chapman. Is it possible they sign Contreras to lure Chapman? A Chapman signing would be the classic hendry move; he seems to love those flame throwers who lack consistency.

Dont bet on it. Whoever signs Chapman will likely be paying ace money, which we dont have, and if we did, I wouldnt recomend spending it on such a raw commodity.

Judging by the names of the teams involved in the Chapman sweepstakes(Marlins, A's...), I doubt that he is going to receive ace-type money. Some reports say that his contract will be in the Strasburg range.
