You probably didn't mean to quote me, but I never said they "sold high". In fact, my post implies that they sold extremely low. There was no market for him, but it appears as though they had to get rid of him. If they didn't have to get rid of him, they could have just signed a similar outfielder through free agency.

This morning on Mike and Mike, Olney was on and said that the Braves were trying hard for a while now to dump Derek Lowe's contract. Nobody would bite, though, so they shipped out Vazquez instead.

i would have taken derek lowe for milton bradley in a heartbeat.

Over Silva, yeah. But I don't like that contract at all.

lowe is making 15 mil for the next 3 seasons. i'd much rather have silva.

Lowe would be useful for those three years, while both are significantly overpaid relative to their production. It's also far more likely you'll get a productive year out of Lowe than Silva.

I can fully understand preferring Silva and it's no slam dunk for me that I'd want Lowe.

Well it comes down to signing a 3/30 contract for a 37 year old Derek Lowe when you frame it like that. I don't think I could sign off on that. (This is assuming a 0 value for Silva, which I really hope is true rather than the negative value he'd certainly provide if he ever pitches for us.)

I wouldn't want either contract. However, at 3/30, Lowe might produce at the level of that contract in, at least, one of the years. At 2/14, Silva almost certainly won't produce at or near the expected level of production for his contract.

Like I said, I don't want either contract, but if I had to choose, it'd probably be Lowe's.

But those aren't your choices. Swapping Silva's contract for Lowe essentially means you paid Silva his full contract, and then went and signed Lowe to a 3/30 deal. That's bad.

The comment I originally referred to was Truffle saying he'd have taken Lowe for Bradley in a heartbeat. Dextermorgan then said he would prefer Silva's contract to Lowe's.

So the debate - I guess - is which would you prefer - trade Bradley for Lowe and his contract, or do the deal Hendry did.

Fangraphs has Lowe worth $12 million in how down 2009 and worth almost twice that in 2008. I'm guessing he'd be worth $10 million+ in 2010. What scares me is 2011 and especially 2012.

I wouldn't want to pay 12 million for a 4.67 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 5.1 K/9, etc. Would you?

I'm not necessarily saying he'll be that bad. I just don't see how his 2009 numbers are worth 12 million.
