All the talk about acquiring a CF, a LH bat and some speed, makes me think of Tyler Colvin. Is he ever going to make it as an everyday player or simply a fill-in?

A lot depends on whether or not he can play a legit CF. I fhe can that increases his chances sinc eit doesn't seem like he'll hit for the kind of power that teams look for from corner OF. The fact that the Cubs took a CF with their 1st round pick in last years draft suggests that the org isn't sold on his ability to stick in CF.

I don't think that fact tells you much of anything. Baseball teams don't draft for positional need in the 1st round.

Yeah, i don't think them drafting a CF indicates anything about their faith in Colvin. Also, most of the CF options currently being discussed are short-term guys and, again, I don't think necessarily indicate doubts from the Cubs about Colvin.

Yeah, Melky Cabrera is the only option I've heard of who would be more than a 1-2 year gap filler. Their #1 target, Mike Cameron, would be a Cub for, at most, 2 years.

As for Colvin, I think eventually he could develop into a solid starter, but only if he can stick in center. He'll probably be the type of player, though, who spends his first few years in the majors as a 4th outfielder type. Maybe at some point he gets a starting shot and sticks, but he'll have to develop into that role, I think.

Sometimes, guys just need a chance. If he were on a team like the Royals or Pirates, maybe hed get that chance, but on a team trying to put together a chanpion with a rapidly closing window, not going to happen anytime soon. He seems like he could be a platoon/4th outfielder if nothing else.

Maybe. But they have had him playing a lot of LF and RF recently. That could certainly be due to the injuries he's had in recent years.

Maybe not at the expense of taking the best player but Jackson certainly fits a need.

It's not a maybe situation.

Colvin playing corners can tell you more about how the Cubs view his future than who they drafted after him.
