Why would Enberg want to do the baseball grind, even if it is only 110-120 games?

This is odd.

San Diego is a nice place to retire. It's also very expensive to live here, so if you can get a gig close to where you want to retire, even better. That's my hunch anyway.

I wonder which guy he is replacing. I really hope Mark Grant will still be there.

According to the article I linked to he's replacing Neely, who will fill in for the games Enberg misses and take on other duties. Grant is returning.

I kind of feel bad for Mark Neeley I think was his name that the Pads hired last yr to replace Matty V only for himself to be replaced. But I guess when you have a chance to bring in a guy like Enberg you take the shot?

I don't know what kind of experience Neely had before he took the Padres job, but I wasn't all that impressed. But, Vasgersian was so good at calling games that it was going to be tough for whoever replaced him.

Mark Grant is solid in the booth as well, but he may not be a good mix for great grandpa Enberg. Grant likes to goof a lot during games, and I'm not sure how that mixes with Enberg's style.

Wasn't Sutcliffe there in San Diego for awhile?

I don't remember him actually having a full time gig here, but he has been a pretty regular fill in guy over the years. I'm sure everyone remembers that time Sutcliffe was wasted during a telecast. That was during a Padres game. The Padres also get Tony Gwynn filling in a lot. And now that he's proven to be a complete failure as a coach, I expect to see him filling in even more often.

I could be wrong though. I don't remember who was here before Vasgersian, so there might have been a year where Sutcliffe was a regular.

Neely was a minor league guy for years until he replaced Vasgersian. Vasgersian replaced Mel Proctor (I think). Grant and Sutcliffe were color guys in some fashion for years in the late 90s/earlys 00s although I don't remember if it was a 3 man booth or what.
