i would just like to see an established coordinator who has been a pro OC before calling the plays. preferably, i'd like a guy who runs an offense that is suited to use the pass to set up the run. turner TRIED to do that this year, but it failed because his vanilla offense was outdated before he got fired at illinois.

Weis >>>> Bates.

Eh. I don't know. Weis' really isn't all that innovative. His offense is basically the West Coast offense with a few modifications. I think it'd be a lot more similar to Ron Turner's offense than most people would like.

coryell vs erhardt, right? i'm not sure how the two systems break down.

Well this Bates guy may never have been an OC, but I'm reading that he called plays in Denver. I would take an unestablished high caliber guy over just another retread OC with experience. I'd prefer a guy who could legimately stand a chance at being the offensive guru this organization desperately needs for the next decade.

Although I hope they look at that Pittsburgh guy as well, especially if he was really fired for being too pass-oriented and not enough Pittsburghish as was reported.

I didn't know either, but that's what a read somewhere.

doing a quick web search, i found that he did indeed call plays in denver, but he also learned under jon shoop in tampa. eek.

Shoop and Gruden, and of course Shanahan. I think the good outweighs the bad. Every coach is going to have some ties to some duds.

does bates run a lot of shotgun/single back sets? i know he said that he was only going to employ the shotgun on third down at USC, but he ran more shotgun/spread/single back forms in denver.

USC had more shotgun and spread elements in its offense under Bates. A lot of the bootleg action was kept around though which he used quite effectively with Cutler in Denver. It didn't work so great with Barkley because he wasn't ready to read the entire defense or make reads at multiple levels. I was down on Bates as the USC OC because he didn't tailor the plays to a freshman very well but I could easily see him being more effective with pros.

Whether it's Weis, Bates, or someone else I'm sure getting Cutler out of the pocket on roll outs and bootlegs will be a big part of the offense.

PFT says they fired the O Line coach, but are keeping Arian after all. Apparently ESPN Radio Pittsburgh spread some bad info.

Bummer, one of the reports was that he was making fun of Tomlin behind his back, which is something I love to picture.

Wow, that one made it all over the country yesterday.

Yeah, but the Steeler fans I know are really whiny. I wouldn't put all that much stock in that.

Fassel's another guy who I would like, but again Bears probably can't lure him here for just a season. They'd need to lay some kind of post-Lovie scenario on the table. And if you do that, you're saying Lovie's gone. That's not what I heard yesterday.

tassel coached xfl jr this year, he will take what he can get. And nobody is going to assume it's just one year. If they do well lovie will be back, if just the off does well the oc will be prime hc candidate.

Fassell is the rumored front runner for the Raider job should Al Davis let Cable go. He'll probably wait on word from that before accepting an OC job with the Bears.

Not sure how reliable this site is, but they are saying Martz will be hired.

On one hand it makes me sick that we're getting another guy who is just a Lovie guy.

On the other hand it makes me happy that we will have a new coach in 2011 and Lovie is just a figure head.

That makes me mad Cutler will get another new OC.

Also makes me mad I have to sit through a whole season of this.

Overall I'm angry. I need to find a college team to root for next season.

It's really not even close. Or at least, the justification for the whining isn't close. Pittsburgh just won a Super Bowl, and they won another not too long ago. Yet their fans have been whining all year about a myriad of topics.

I really don't see him as a Lovie guy. Lovie guys are all defensive coaches in love with the Tampa 2. Martz was in STL long before Lovie was, and if anything, Lovie is a Martz guy, as he was his defensive coordinator in STL. I don't even consider Turner a Lovie guy, as he was basically an autonomous CEO of the offense.

I'm not sure how much stock I put into this report, but I think I'd love to see a situation where a guy like Martz is the OC and that Bates dude is the QB coach.

That's the best-case scenario, IMO.
