Alberto Callaspo

The Royals are shopping Callaspo this off-season, they're looking for a catcher in return. Hmmm don't we have some of those lying around in the minors.

Castillo or Robinson or Hill for Callaspo

Go get him Jim, discuss.

He's not bad, but I wouldn't give up much. Is he really that much better than Fontenot?

I think he might be. He's a switch hitter and he's consistently hit lefties better than righties. He's usually in the .700s OPS against righties.

In his at least partly full seasons (2007-2009), he's posted an OPS of .535, .731 and .813. It's promising to me that he's gotten better each year and he's only 26. If nothing else, a platoon of him and Fontenot should be productive, though the same could be said of Baker. If the Royals would take Castillo or, especially, Hill, I might just do it. But I wouldn't give up more.

I wouldn't give up Castillo for him. Castillo's stock took a hit this year but he still has potential. And Hill will be the backup again. Maybe Robinson or Clevenger but I don't know. I wouldn't give up much for him, but that's just me.

My thinking is that Castillo, Clevenger and Robinson are all likely future backup catchers in the majors. Castillo might be the best of the group, but his upside is still limited. Callaspo, however, is an ideal platoon type second baseman now and could turn into a full-time starter if he can start hitting righties better.

I'd rather give Clevenger or Robinson, but I doubt they're enough to do it.

He's been an excellent contact hitter his whole minor league career, the power he showed last year was kind of out of the ordinary. I don't think he was ever pegged as a anything more than a contact guy... but he's been a top organizational prospect with both the Angels and DBacks. Who knows, maybe under the tutelage of Jaramillo he could produce for more power, but yeah this is definitely a case of the Royals trying to capitalize off a big year from him. I like him as a player, I think he will be a solid second basemen, just not anything overly spectacular. If he could consistently produce like that in the bottom half of the lineup that'd be perfectly fine by me, but I'd imagine the Royals might be trying to get more than what he's worth. If he could be had for Hill I'd do it in a heartbeat (he won't be, Hill is turrible offensively). Callaspo's upside would be nice, as he's still got some experience to gain, IMO... but yeah, if he can be had for the right price, I'd get him.

Honestly, it would be dumb for Dayton Moore to pull this trade. Callaspo's defense isn't great, but it's not the worst. But this is Dayton Moore we're talking about here, so I'm not too pleased about hearing this news, as a Royals fan.

With that being said, if the Royals are looking for a catcher, I would imagine they are looking for a MLB-ready catcher. Lord knows they need a catcher in a bad way, because John Buck/Miguel Olivo combo was the fail.

Bump, why? Because this is a move that needs to be done. We aren't getting Polanco or Roberts, and I don't like Castillo or Felipe Lopez enough to want them on this team. Callaspo will come cheap, and Hendry definitely has the pieces now to make this happen. As soon as Castro is ready for the bigs you either move Theriot over to 2nd and trade Callaspo, or simply keep Callaspo and let go of a declining Ryan Theriot. Callaspo isn't even arbitration eligible yet. The Royals need a young catcher... hmmm we don't have any of those wasting away in the minors do we?

Mariners and Royals are talking about Callaspo, per MLBTR, if he is available hopefully Jimbo does his homework and see what it would take to get him. Callaspo would be a nice addition to our lineup and provide a solid offensive option for 2B and back-up 3B.
