I don't think anybody here has a shortage of GMs they'd take over Hendry. People are just afraid of how stupid most GMs are, and fear we'll be stuck with a Bavasi like buffoon.

We're already stuck. The possiblity of getting worse shouldn't even be a consideration.

It can't even be considered? Man, that's strict.

It's not like anyone is actually saying, "don't fire Hendry because the next guy would be worse." There's a huge difference between that and "go ahead and fire Hendry...but I'm not getting my hopes up that the next guy will be any better."

Anyone still think the next GM could be worse?

It doesn't matter whether he's worse or not, if he doesn't win the WS posters will rip him to shreds and complain that he's the worst ever. Everybody's jumping all over Sandberg already and he's not even close to being the manager of the Cubs.

you're right. none of us has any idea what Sandberg would do as a manager. It's not like we have numerous articles about his philosophy nor a couple seasons worth of managing in the minors to draw from.

I'm not saying I'm for Sandberg as manager, I'm just saying that Sandberg's philosophy and style of managing might change according to the type of team he has. When Tyler Colvin is the big HR hitter in your lineup, you better find a way to manufacture runs. When you have a lineup with Soriano, ARam, Soto, and DLee (assuming all are healthy), you might not have to manufacture runs.

The we could be worse nonsense [snip]

Seriously, this is almost as bad as the, "don't fire Dusty we had back to back .500 seasons for the first time in 30 years" BS.

We could be worse is nonsense? Give me a [expletive] break.

I guess I'm just more concerned with who IS our GM rather than who ISNT. If Ricketts loves Bill Bavasi or Jim Bowden or Steve Freaking Stone, I couldn't give a [expletive] whether or not Hendry deserves to keep his job (he doesn't). I want the Cubs to be in the best possible situation next year... and there's a very large amount of GM candidates on the market who would be actively taking this team a step backwards.

And I think that's a pretty pathetic way of looking at things. They could be a heck of a lot better, and I'd like to see them do so. Hendry epitomizes mediocrity and I don't see why we should stick with that out of fear of failure.

@Mojo

Granted. But if a new GM was brought in he'd likely be too preoccupied to chase after junk like Figgins, which I fully expect Hendry to do.

Where did I say stick with Hendry?

I'm saying if we think we can get a White, Antonetti, Towers, DePodesta, Ng, one of Theo's boys out in Boston, etc... I'm all for firing Hendry. I'm not scared of giving some of those guys their shot. But there's work to be done beforehand. You call up the parent organizations and ask for permission to interview. You put out a feeler to Towers.

You don't just fire Hendry and then start doing those things. That's how you end up [expletive] outta luck and find out your best option to replace Hendry is promoting Randy Bush or hiring Jim Bowden.

So you want to interview candidates while Hendry is still GM? That will go over really well. And what is Hendry supposed to do while he's in this quasi lame-duck status? Who makes the decisions regarding arbitration, trades, etc.?

There's a difference between finding out if you can interview a candidate and actually interviewing a candidate. I think Rob is saying find out if those GMs are available and, if so, make the decision on Hendry then. Basically, don't fire Hendry and then find out good GM candidates are not available.

Oh dear God.

Steve Stone as GM

Ryne Sandberg as manager

haha. Ricketts is a homer. So, I can certainly understand why people would be afraid of the possibility of Steve Stone as GM, Sandberg as manager, Todd Hundley as bullpen coach, Shawon Dunston as hitting coach, Mel Rojas as pitching coach, Dave Kingman as fielding coach, and Moises Alou and Billy Buckner as 1st and 3rd base coaches.

Let's trust that Ricketts values his money, or lack thereof at this point, a little bit more than that.

If he does the above, my summer's will certainly be a lot more productive as I'll probably get every little side project imagineable done because it will be more fun to do these painful side projects than it will be to watch the Cubs.

They got so bad this year that I stopped watching them. I need some motivation to start watching them again. Having a homer as a team owner is not exactly the best of starts, but I'm not willing to assume he will make poor business decisions based on who he has idolized most of his life.

I wouldn't start those projects yet. Any team with a coaching staff that OTT bad would be must watch entertainment.
