While stealing signs isn't explicitly against the rules, some instances of stealing signs have been found to be against Rule 21

(f) OTHER MISCONDUCT. Nothing herein contained shall be construed as exclusively defining or otherwise limiting acts, transactions, practices or conduct not to be in the best interests of Baseball; and any and all other acts, transactions, practices or conduct not to be in the best interests of Baseball are prohibited and shall be subject to such penalties, including permanent ineligibility, as the facts in the particular case may warrant.

When this rule has been applied to sign stealing, it's usually been applied to situations where outside equipment (binoculars, cameras, etc) have been used. I don't think it's ever been officially applied in a situation like this.

I played soccer and tennis before transferring to Ball State because the school I was at barely had a Comm department let alone TCOM.

And as far as diving in soccer goes, you as a player yourself should know how controversial that topic is. A lot of players would dive every chance they get and some players would never dive. I never dove but that was more so because when I was fighting for a ball the thought wouldn't pop in my head. If the thought did occur I would rather stay in and try to win the ball rather than risk diving and not getting the call.

Its one thing to dive to deceive, and another to sell a call. If teams don't want their opponents "stealing signs", then they should do more to prevent it, since it's part of the game and happens during play. Just as football teams work hard to prevent teams from stealing signals. What makes baseball so damned sacred to people? If Joe Mauer figured out the signals, good on him.

Yeah. There's a very big difference between a guy penalty hunting by jumping over a defender's leg and going down, and getting bumped or knocked off balance and going down to try to pick up a penalty.

Not all dives are the same. I hate the former but don't really mind the latter.

Sportsmanlike? Really?

The pitcher is already attempting to deceive the hitter by not letting him know in advance what he's throwing. The catcher basically knows every aspect of the hitter's ability by studying game films.

If the pitcher and catcher are too stupid to switch up their signals when someone is on base, they deserve whatever happens.

Correct. I have no inkling as to why someone would think than an active participant in the game (guy standing off second) shouldn't attempt to steal signs if he has the know-how.

I would agree with that. I always hated divers of all kinds though. It wasn't so much that they dove as it was that most refs at the high school level operate under the guide of if someone falls there must have been a foul. One kid at a rival school was a really bad diver. Everyone knew it and if he got anywhere near someone else and thought he wasn't going to win he would dive. Got a lot of calls on that crap. He also broke his collarbone in each of his last three seasons so karma got him back.

Wow we had different sets of signals in high school ball when runners went on base. We would either use the 3rd sign, 4th sign etc in the sequence and switch it up when runners were on base.

Stealing sign has been used in 3 different Centuries. I see no problem with it, I believe its the Catchers/Pitchers fault if they dont hide their sequence good enough.

Another team stealing the signs. Oh, the horror!

Why do managers go through a litany of signals to their catchers and coaches? Why do third base coaches seemingly give themselves a rubdown before just about every pitch? Why do catchers flash indicators to their pitchers when there are runners on?

Why is this even being discussed?
