But let's say we get Detroit, Vancouver and San Jose in the first three rounds. I'd say we are 55%, 70% and 65% to beat each of those three teams individually. But the odds of running through all three, if those odds are correct, would only be 25%.

What are the odds of any team going through 3 teams to the finals? Can't be much better.

Heck, in any sport.

Exactly. The whole "championship or it's a disappointment" thing befuddles me in the era of 30-team leagues.

Why? It may be highly unlikely for one's team to win a championship in any given year, but that doesn't mean fans shouldn't be disappointed with anything less sometimes.

Are the Hawks going to win the Stanley Cup? It's unlikely. Am I going to be disappointed anyway? Yes, of course. This is a team that has those sort of expectations, IMO. Having those sort of expectations two years, or even one year ago wouldn't have made sense, but it does now.

I'm not saying they should or shouldn't feel disappointed. It's an emotion, and you can't control whether you feel it or not.

It's just odd to me.

While I agree with your stance on expectations in a 30 team league, you think that emotional reactions are odd after say, losing in the Stanley Cup Finals (or whenever)?

When the Bears lost the Super Bowl, I was in no way prepared to call that a disappointment.

you weren't disappointed when they lost the the biggest game (or tie for biggest) in modern bear history?

And yet they will be able to maintain these expectations for a few years, at least. Last year they had the 6th most points in the NHL, this year they are third. I understand having some disappointment whenever they lose their last game, but as long as it's not a 1 and done scenario, there's no good reason for the disappointment to be deep or lasting. Ownership is clearly committed to this team, the core is quite young. If they flame out with Huet, you can be close to convinced they will solve that problem, even if it involves cutting him to get the numbers off the books. This isn't a team with a closing window. They are a contender and quite unlike the Cubs their strength is not based simply on having more resources than the competition, and unlike the Bears, their contention isn't based on an unsustainable combination like defense and special teams with no QB. There's plenty of reason to have patience with this team and happy with something less than a championship.

We're getting caught up in semantics here.

Are we talking about being disappointed by the final outcome or considering the entire season a disappointment?

no semantics. were you disappointed when they lost the super bowl?

Yes. But that year's Bears season was still awesome and I wasn't disappointed with it.

Being disappointed in the result of a game and calling a season a disappointment are quite different. The 2006 Bears were not a disappointment.

this is what was said, there's no room for interpretation, here.

There's plenty of room. Calling the game a disappointment or calling the season a disappointment.

Well, there's two possibilities.

One is that I entirely changed my mind between that post and this one.

The other is that in a message-board format, I wrote the sentence poorly and the word "that" was meant to have the antecedent of "The Bears' season" and not "The Bears' Super Bowl loss."

Given that I've made my position clear in several other posts, I think it's pretty safe to say that I just worded that sentence poorly. It should have probably read "When the Bears' season ended with a Super Bowl loss, I was in no way prepared to call that a disappointment."

I was completely wrong in the post you referenced, and I am dutifully sorry. I have taken my opinion of myself down a suitable peg.

If I considered this season to be the only shot the Blackhawks will have to win a championship, then I would be more upset if they didn't.

But even with some upcoming defections, I still believe this team will have opportunities to get there in upcoming seasons. I expect the Hawks to be contenders for awhile.

If we don't win it this year, we'll be back.

but i never said anything about tom morello.

Tom Morello taught me that I'm a racist. You taught me that I was imprecise with my language. You're like the teachers in the Giver.

i've never taught anyone anything and i don't know who tom morello is.

As far as I'm concerned, no matter what the Hawks do in the playoffs this has been a fun season. I'll be mad if they don't win the Cup but that won't take away from what they've done this year. If they lose in the first or second round the worst part will not be missing a once in a lifetime opportunity, it will be people doubting their chances next year because they lost a playoff series.

I think if they just stuck with Niemi- and said you're the starter tomorrow regardless of what happens today he would settle down and play well.
