That's no guarentee of success.

It's usually a pretty good indicator of it though. Barring a ton of injuries.

Here's the top 3 payrolls from last year and where they finished in their division.

Yankees - 3rd place

Tigers - LAST PLACE

Mets - 2nd place

And the Yankees and Tigers had a ton of injuries.

Regardless, the point is money is not always a great indicator of how well you'll do. In recent times, yes, the cubs have had a very high payroll. But they've won back to back division titles - last year winning 97 freaking games. So what's your problem? Hendry has been given a ton of money and had lots of recent success. Could he have spent it better? Always. But this bottom-5 crap is ridiculous.

As I've pointed out in the past (2003 or so), it's usually a good indicator, but there's enough randomness in the system that you can never be sure. I did the 5 biggest payroll teams after the Yankees over the previous 5 years, and it came out to something like an 87 win average. One of those teams was the Orioles in their debacle era, so that's not bad.

They have. And I think Lou's done a really good job keeping them afloat, but maybe that's more how bad the rest of the division was.

I don't believe that. I've seen Cub teams tank, and when that happens they just lose. Almost regardless of competition. I know the division isn't that strong, but I still think the Cubs have done a good job not letting themselves just sink under the weight of the challenges they've faced this season.

These next 7 will be tough.

I hate the Cubs.

They're like that family member that some people have: You lost all faith in them years ago, you can't count on them for anything, and just when it seems they're going to turn their lives around, they screw up again in an epic fashion. But, you'll always love them and support them no matter what. But you want to kill them on a regular basis.

Probably not, but there's a better-than-average chance we get someone better than Hendry.

And what are basing this on?

Look around baseball and look at who the GM's are year after year. Hendry really isn't that bad so that a replacement would be likely to be significantly better than him or even better at all in the big picture.

Wow, bob with a little bit of snark regarding soriano. yikes.

It really doesn't matter that much in the long run but it really is stupid that he doesn't even attempt to run hard sometimes.

And Fontenot better hope he gets hit or something because he isn't hitting this guy.
