The quote from the dispatch article...sounds like a whole lot of speculation and nothing more:

The Washington Nationals had a scout attend the Cardinals' Class AAA affiliate's game in Memphis on Tuesday. The Nationals, who host the Cardinals on Thursday, are entertaining offers for outfielder Adam Dunn.

They should be targeting a team in dire need of an OF who is desperate enough to give up one of their top pitching prospects. They need young pitching, if they go after more hitters they're morons. Personally, I'd try and see if the Giants would part with Tim Alderson. He's still a couple years away and the Giants are potential contenders with the need for serious offense.

That would suck hot monkey balls. If TLR were smart he'd bat him right in front of Al.

Defense matters

They had Chris Duncan in LF. I think the upgrade in offense more than outweighs any defensive difference there might be.

It sure looks like the Cards will be adding a bat of some sort, be it Holliday or Dunn. That's more than a little scary.

Apparently talks are heating up with Oakland for Holliday as well. The word is that the Duncan for Lugo deal was the first in a series of moves.

How is that the first in a series of moves except by a loose definition considering all trades a series of trades? How does swapping out Duncan for Lugo open up anything, unless they trade Brendan Ryan and Bo Hart for Halladay?

Agreed. The Giants are extremely weak on the offensive side of the ball, and I don't understand why they are not trying harder to acquire a big bat. Dunn would be a great fit for them.

By the loose definition, wouldn't the Derosa trade be the first?

They are looking at Dunn and Holliday, who are both outfielders, and just traded Duncan, who was an outfielder. Seems pretty simple to me.

Ankiel, Ludwick, Schumaker, Rasmus, DeRo, and Stavinoha can all play the OF. Add in the Glaus experiment when/if he returns. Couldn't they have traded Duncan because they had a massive logjam in the OF and need a SS?

Schumaker and DeRo are primarily 2nd basemen and they'd likely prefer Glaus at third if possible. That leaves Ankiel, Ludwick, Rasmus and Stavinoah as the primary OFs. Acquiring Dunn/Holliday and dealing Duncan leaves them with 5 OFs after the trades are made.

Stavinoha isn't going to be on the roster long, DeRosa is going to be primarily a 3b and Schumaker pretty much only sees the OF as a late inning defensive replacement. He's made 3 starts in the OF all year. I know it's pretty stupid, but he's now 90% a 2b in Tony's mind.

And because Chris Duncan's useless?

There's also that and Ankiel has been even more useless.

Nevermind the fact that LaRussa has talked about putting Lugo in the OF.

Haven't seen that. Sorry that you can't see that the trade opened up an outfield spot.

So would murdering Chris Duncan in cold blood, but I probably wouldn't tie that to an Adam Dunn acquisition.

Though Marty Brennaman would be suspicious no doubt.

That doesn't make any sense, but ok. When the trade went down yesterday it was speculated that it was the first in a series of moves.

The options weren't play Chris Duncan in LF or play with 8 players. If they wanted to open up a spot they didn't need to trade Duncan, they just needed to stop playing him everyday. The fact that they got a piece of [expletive] like Lugo is even worse than if they just outright released Duncan.
