The Cubs will take 2 of 3 this weekend against the Reds and some Cub fans will be back on the playoff train. This team isn't good and this team's manager isn't good.

This is why you don't get excited about sweeping a team that everybody sweeps.

The Cubs are an average team, period.

To be fair getting to down on the team because they get beat on the road against the hottest team in baseball is not smart either. Although that kind of defends the point that they are average.

I don't care if the Phillies are on a 20 game win streak. You have to beat good teams on the road in the postseason and the Cubs have failed to do that all season.

When you get beat by the Phillies, its understandable to be pounded by their offense, but when your offense gets shut down by guys like Lopez, Blanton, and Park, thats your own problem. We shut that offense down for the most part, but our guys looked as worthless as they did all through May and June.

How many more games do we have with the Nats.

Please say something like 50 or so. If not, this team is in trouble.

The Nats hadn't been swept at home in 2 months, with serieses against the Braves, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Reds, Mets, Giants, and Orioles in that span.

Good teams get good records by beating the crap out of the awful ones. Winning 1 out of 3 at Philadelphia is what should have been expected. Philly is one of the top teams in the NL, if you're winning serieses on the road against the best teams in your league then you are the best team in the league. Tonight [expletive] blew, but to say oh look the Cubs are awful cause they can only beat shitty teams...I wasn't aware Philly's been steamrolling the Dodgers every night. Idiots make these arguments every [expletive] year, "oh yeah we can beat up on the Pirates, come back to me when we sweep an 11 game series in Yankee Stadium!!"

The fact is, with a team like the Phillies, even if you lose, you can still score. There pitching is not good. Not by any means. Losing 9-6 or 7-5 is one thing, but weve only scored 2 runs in 22 innings vs. these guys. Besides, whichever NL Central team manages to backdoor their way into October will likely face the Phillies or Giants, at which point winning 1 game wont do.

The Phillies should keep dipping into the well. Oh wait, they already did with Pedro Martinez. Wonder what Fernando Valenzuela and Hideo Nomo are doing?

Winning 1 game on the road would do, which is what I was talking about. The Phillies pitchers these 1st 2 games was pretty asstastic, but their hitting is easily the best in the NL and we held them to 2 runs in 13 innings tonight. For whatever reason people get more down on a team for losing by 1 run in 13 innings then 26 runs in 9.

They get down on the team when they lose 2-1 more than if they get blown out because you're supposed to win games when you hold the opposition to 1-3 runs, and this team loses these games farrrr too often. You can't keep wasting good pitching performances all season ong and then expect to make the playoffs. Getting blown out happens. You aren't going to win games when your starter gets rocked and you give up like 10 runs. You got destroyed and you lost. But losing a game 2-1 because you can't scrape across a run again Chan Ho Park and Clay Condrey is ridiculous and beyond infuriating.... and it keeps happening to this team over and over.

The pitching is not a problem, and hasn't been all season. We know this team has good pitching. Whether or not we make the playoffs depedns on whether or not we can score runs. Everytime they start to score runs and look like they're going to get it going, they immediately crap out again.

Only scoring 2 runs in these 2 games so far is much more relevant to this team's postseason hopes than the fact that they shut the Phillies offense down tonight. They've been shutting down team's offenses all year and are still hovering around .500. The offense got going in Washington, and then took another huge step back by getting shut down for 2 games in a bandbox by crappy pitchers.

As usual, a Cubs winning streak has about as much momentum as my personal life. This team is akin to women that lead me on then destroy my life. Ah well, at least the Cardinals are losing too.

Thank you sir. I spend most of my time lurking instead of posting these days. I was hoping to start a thread like this and get some positivity vibes flowing. Didn't work. Let's hope Z can shut them down today.

It worked for the board. For the team, not so much.

Hey man, the plural of series is...series

If we can take today's game, is there really anything worth complaining about in our results? Did anyone really expect to go into Philly and win the series?

No, but last night's game was winnable. They could have had a legit shot at taking the series today. Now they have a possibility of getting swept.

I happen to really like the word serieses. I might even love that word.

I tried to keep it going, and I'm with you brother -- I have a great feeling about the second half. Actually, this was a very good thread up until last night. Then the negativity really started to flow. One thing I've learned about baseball is that it's a long season, and it's important to differentiate the forest and the trees. The trees say that the Cubs stink because they lost 2/3 from the Phillies. The forest says the Cubs went 5-2 on the first road trip after the All-Star break.

No and no.

It was a good road trip, and while last night was very winnable, Saturday was very winnable for the Nats. You win some of those and you lose some of those. Much to be happy about, I think.
