Eduardo Figueroa assigned to Boise Hawks from AZL Cubs.

:D

Wish he could have taken Julio Pena with him.

AZL Cubs should have Toby Matchulat and Cody Hams piggy backing.

So far...

- Marcus Hatley with another terrible outing: 2.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 5 R, 1 BB, 0 SO, 2 HR, for a 5.42 ERA. I think it's time to remove him from the rotation (if not release him!).

- Rebel Ridling and Kyler Burke with their 9th and 7th HR's on the season, respectively.

- Dan McDaniel allowed a few baserunners today: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR, 4.28 ERA

- Jeremy Papelbon with a nice start for Tennessee: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR, 3.36 ERA (He has climbed up my prospect list a bit this year - ignore his April numbers and he has had a solid year in AA. He's a bit old, but he's lefty!)

- Esmailing Caridad was a little wild at first, but settled down to have a nice outing: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR, 4.25 ERA (and he singled as well). (He might not be done yet.)

- Tony Campana was caught stealing (only his 9th CS to go with 43 SB this year - 79% SB%) I think he could be used as a B/C-level prospect in a trade. I'm not sure he will hit at Tennessee or above - he's a 23-year old slap hitter with a low OBP.

- The lower half of Daytona's lineup getting it done today: Chirinos is 2-for-2, Wyatt scored after reaching on a FC, Vitters scored after a single, M. Gonzalez doubled them both home.

Tony Campana (who was 2-for-3) was ejected from the game in the 5th inning requiring four defensive moves:

(1) Luis Flores in at catcher.

(2) Robinson Chirinos moves from catcher to 1B.

(3) Jake Opitz moves from 1B to 2B.

(4) Marwin Gonzalez moves from 2B to CF.

Ejections: Tampa Yankees Pitching Coach Greg Pavlick ejected by 1B umpire Mario Seneca. (5th); Daytona Cubs center fielder Tony Campana ejected by 1B umpire Mario Seneca. (5th).

I didnt realsie Miles was on a rehab. In his typical fashion, he went 0-3. They'll no doubt send Fox or Fuld down when hes ready so we can have 3 crappy second basemen instead of 2.

4 if you count blanco as a 2b

i don't know much about robert wagner, but he's beating the crap of the AZL.

rusin: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 4 GO/1 FO

Matchulat 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4 GO/3 FO

jackson has walked 4 times tonight now. that's 14 walks in 15 games. hopefully the tyler colvin comparisons will stop.

Striking out in 1/4 of his ABs at Boise won't help.

Logan Watkins is 20 for his last 39 and 15 of his last 22.

yeah he is hot for sure. i just wish he had more power to go with the singles. those walks are going to evaporate at higher levels if he doesn't develop some pop.

hak ju lee finished the game 3-5, a home run short of the cycle. for a skinny guy who's only 18 he seems to have a little bit of extra base power (probably just slashing the ball down the line or in the gap and using his great speed. he's performing very well for a foreign teenager making his debut at advanced short season ball.

I know Bristow was shut down late last season with elbow problems but I never knew he had surgery until I read an ITI story today:

Afterward, Bristow underwent off-season surgery to move a nerve in his right arm and since then, the operation has bothered his progress.

It's nice to see someone with an approach like Watkins. When was the last time we had a legit hitting prospect walking more than he was striking out? Watkins is a superior athlete and was supposed to play football, so I have hope the power will come.

Where does Watkins project, defensively? I know he's playing a lot of 2b, but is that just because Lee is at SS for Boise, or is it because Watkins is likely to end up at 2b?

2B or outfield, probably, the way he throws now. Arizona Phil has said that he has kind of a side-armed throw, a quick release throw that's good from 2B and good on DP, throwing around the runner. But doesn't look right for the deep throw from SS.

That's one comment by Phil, of course. I don't know if he's got SS arm strength or not; perhaps he does. And he's 19, so if he's making quick snap throws at 2B because he can, perhaps if he switch to SS he'd adjust as needed and throw like a SS. He did play at SS on occasion in extended spring, when Lee was still rehabbing. But I wonder if there just aren't reasons why he doesn't project realistically as a big-league SS.

Of course, this is the Cubs. They hardly used Fox at 3B, so I assumed that if he had any chance they'd have trained him up a bunch there. That assumption was incorrect. I've been shocked that with limited practice, he's been as adequate as was true. Likewise with Theriot, we had all these SS problems with Neifi and Izturis and they had him mostly playing 2B in the minors, so I assumed they must have seen good reasons why he wasn't really big-league SS acceptable. Not correct.

So even if the Cubs aren't playing watkins at SS because they don't think he can, perhaps their judgment isn't right even if they think that.

But obviously Lee appears to be a better SS prospect, so it makes sense that Lee is getting the action there.

Posted
yeah, supposedly lee is an extremely good fielder and his arm is outstanding.

I had heard good things about his defense, so it wasn't a big surprise that he was getting the bulk of the PT at SS...so it just made me curious if Lee's talent was the reason Watkins wasn't playing SS, or if the Cubs see him as a better fit at 2b.

I didn't realize that either, but it makes me a little encouraged that he might be a better pitcher than he appears to be this year. Usually pitchers show improvement about a year after surgeries, so maybe his low K total and higher ERA this year could be slightly attributed to the scar tissue or whatever and after a little cleanup this off-season may be more effective next year???? Who knows?
