Lengthy Starlin Castro and Josh Vitters story: http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/Sports/Headlines/sptCUBS02071109.htm

If we were so lucky:

"I'm glad we're starting to change the trend of Cubs prospects that I've been hearing about," Vitters said this week. "I love playing with Starlin over there at shortstop. I was kind of thinking how the Mets (have Jose Reyes and David Wright) and hopefully we can be that way with the Cubs in the future."

"The only other player I've ever put on a scouting report that when he plays in the big leagues his team will be a contender to win a championship every year is Derek Jeter, and at the halfway point this season I put that report in on Castro," Bailey said.

"We have a player here who is going to play every day on the big-league level and put us in position to win championships," Bailey said. "There are players who play in the big leagues and then there are players you have who are special and you can win championships with. He's above an everyday big-league player."

"Obviously Josh's bat speed is good and he makes good contact," Hughes said. "Now as he moves up, the question is he going to be able to recognize pitches. He wanted to be in professional baseball. There's no doubt. Now it just becomes a daily grind. Some guys survive it, some guys don't. Strange things happen. But we think we have a good one. We picked him third in the country."

And:

"I think we definitely are a little more free-swinging," said Vitters, who is trying to cut down his strikeouts and still maintain his power production. "They don't mess with you too much, which I definitely like, but if you swing at a bad pitch or swing at a first-pitch curveball, you'll hear something from the coaches, which I think is necessary."

Hughes, who is in his 41st year in baseball and is a member of the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame, said the Cubs tried to place some restrictions on hitters in the past, but that didn't work.

"We don't have any rules about batters having to take pitches -- I think we experimented a little with that a couple of years ago and dropped that," Hughes said. "There are different ways. Nobody's got the right answer. Some kids can develop with those restrictions on them, but I think our philosophy is that we hope they learn the strike zone. We're not against walks and on-base percentage, but we don't want to take the bat out of their hands either."

Futures Game is on now.

What channel? ESPN2 has the 2008 Future's Game on now but that is all I can find unless I am missing it somewhere.

2009 game is currently in a rain delay.

Apparently they still hope to get the game in. If they can't I wonder if they could play it tomorrow afternoon, since the Home Run Derby isn't until the evening. It would be grossly unfair to the players to outright cancel the game.

hernandez is still at boise... raisin misspoke. he did get the win, as boise's atrocious bullpen narrowly avoided blowing the lead.

carpenter's numbers at daytona: 16 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 21 K. on the season he's at 89.2 IP, 66 H, 24 ER, 38 BB, 81 K. he also has a nice GO/FO ratio... about 1.70 after today's game.

What did Vitters do in his 2nd ab? I just switched the game on and saw him at 2B.

He BBed.

Castro got aboard on a swinging bunt. He also made a fine defensive play a second base.

Is there any chance that Carpenter makes it to AAA this season?

Mike Safford[/url]"]Jae-Hoon Ha had to leave today's game after being hit on the left arm by a fastball, forcing Watkins to move into left field - as the Hawks had just two position players available on the bench (Hak-Ju Lee, who went to SS, and catcher Matt Williams)
