Daytona News-Journal[/url]"]They also had terrific pitching Sunday. Starter Chris Carpenter (1-1) set the tone with eight strikeouts and one run on six hits in six innings of work.

"He had a couple of 10-pitch innings, and the game was pretty much controlled by him after we got the runs for him," Bailey said. "He did a great job. He didn't give them any chances to get back in the game."

"It definitely takes something out of you when you're sitting in the dugout with those long innings, but you just have to keep your concentration and make sure you throw strikes after your teammates go out and get you runs like they did," Carpenter said.

And Carpenter didn't walk a single batter. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before Steve Susdorf ripped a hanging changeup over the fence in right.

"It was my fault; I just left the changeup up," Carpenter said. "I was frustrated with myself."

Carpenter may have been frustrated, but he didn't let it affect his pitching. He struck out the next batter with a 94-mph fastball.
