Cubs Release B.J. Ryan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 5 at 4:18pm CST]

B.J. Ryan asked for his release and the Cubs gave it to him, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal last month after the Blue Jays released him. Apparently, Ryan's velocity and sharpness did not return during his brief stint in the Cubs' system.

Well that was worthless. So I take it hes signed by the Cards and developes a 105 MPH fast ball.

OMG, every player who's ever played for the Cardinals has turned to GOLD! The Cardinals are the luckiest team in baseball. Cardinals, yeah!

Pixie dust! You forgot pixie dust!

It seems as if the Cubs had no intention of bringing Ryan up once they saw his velocity sit in the high 80's. I wonder what the heck they expected....he was pitching at the velocity in Toronto, what did they expect to do to bring that velocity up? Maybe they stole some pixie dust from St. Louis and tried it on Ryan as an experiment. Hopefully now they know that the pixie dust only works for the Cardinals, and if its used by someone other then them, the dust is rendered completely useless.

It was a worthwhile gamble, IMO. If you catch lightning in the bottle, then you got a nice stable of lefties for the remainder of the season, if not nothing lost.

You have to respect Ryan for recognizing where he was and asking for his release. A lot of players might hang around for a pity September callup or something. And Lou isn't the worst manager to hope your 87 mph fastball fooling AAA hitters might get you more than a pity callup either.

Or, if you just want to be morbid, he needed to get a jump start on his long summer of HGH injections.

You do realize that my post was inteneded to be just as sarcastic as your response to said post. Obviously, when he signs with the Cards he'll throw 102 MPH tops.

So you're saying maybe they had some new kind of flaxseed oil to try on his arm to increase his strength and velocity?

Sad turn to the story, maybe I was overly optimistic about this signing. I thought maybe he could get to the point to help this team come September callups. Seemed to be doing decently in the minors outside of Velo and some walks.

At first I was furious we didn't give him a chance... but I guess if he ASKED to be released... then it was the right thing to do. No sense keeping him someplace he doesn't wanna be.

Would you really be furious we didn't give a guy with zero velocity a chance?

It's one thing to make the damn pixie dust joke about every current or former Cardinals player. But do we really need to make it about guys who aren't with the Cardinals or even rumored to be going there?

There are plenty of guys out there who are effective than throw 88mph. Not to mention how bad our bullpen is. I think the guy has enough upside that he at least deserves a chance to suck.

Yeah, but there aren't that many that relied on their velocity who have success after losing it. He's not Trevor Hoffman.

Our pen isn't that bad. It's pretty decent.

There's 32 teams. Name three effective closers that top out at 88mph. I'll get you started - Hoffman.

okay - only two more!

Anyway...

You guys aren't doing a great job convincing me about relievers being effective while topping out at 88.
