All the scouts said Edmonds was washed up last year, that his swing had slowed down, he couldn't get around on a good fastball, his knees would never hold up, etc.

hendry said the main reason they signed edmonds was because they scouted him.

I wasn't referring to the Cubs' scouts. I meant everyone else. Obviously we aren't going to sign someone who our scouts say is washed up and can't hit anymore.

The Cub Reporter[/url]"]In other news from Mesa, LHP B. J. Ryan reported to Fitch Park last Sunday, and has spent the past five days working one-on-one with Cubs Minor League Pitching Coordinator Mark Riggins. They are starting with long toss, and working up from there to delivery, arm slot, and release point. Ryan does his work in the morning, many hours before game-time and out of sight of most fans.

B.J. Ryan-R-Cubs Aug. 3 - 1:40 pm et

B.J. Ryan has made three scoreless appearances with Triple-A Iowa, with his fastball topping out in the 86-88 MPH range.

Obviously the bar has been lowered quite a bit to call this progress. Ryan had a chance at joining Sean Marshall as the second southpaw in the Cubs' pen, but since they acquired John Grabow last week, there is less of a sense of urgency to bring him up. The Cubs must decide by August 10 if they want to call up Ryan, before he can opt out of his contract and sign with someone else.

I cant see any non injury related scenerio in which hes brought up by the 10th, so unless hes willing to hang around Iowa until September, it looks liek the BJ Ryan era could end before it begins.

Actually, I believe the Cubs have till August 12th to decide. Not sure where Rotoworld got the 10th.

I think if we give Grabow a chance instead of Ryan... that would be a big mistake.

We just gave up Kevin Hart for Grabow - not sure why we'd then ditch him for Ryan and his 86mph fastball...

Because he's BJ RYAN. who cares if he just got released. all he needs is a change of scenery. he should be called up right now and be our closer. he's BJ RYAN

I hope we fix him.

The thing that fixes him is HGH.

Which there remains no test for. Somebody get the man a weekend trip to the Dominican Republic STAT.

Nobody complains about Trevor Hoffman's velocity. It's very possible for Ryan to learn to be effective with an 88mph fastball.

Hoffman has one of the best change-ups in the last 20 years, which allowed him to go from a power pitcher to a finesse guy. Ryan has to demonstrate he can do that with a FB/slider combo, typical pitches of a power pitcher.

BJ in the dugout could really help pick up the morale of the team.

Erin Andrews hasn't been around a whole lot the past two weeks.

Looks like he's done

Ryan asked for his release and was granted it today. Felt his velocity and sharpness wouldn't get there.

Cubs Release B.J. Ryan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 5 at 4:18pm CST]

B.J. Ryan asked for his release and the Cubs gave it to him, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal last month after the Blue Jays released him. Apparently, Ryan's velocity and sharpness did not return during his brief stint in the Cubs' system.

Well that was worthless. So I take it hes signed by the Cards and developes a 105 MPH fast ball.
