A's Acquire Scott Hairston

By Eddie Schmid [July 5 at 8:28pm CST]

According to the official Padres Twitter, the Padres have traded Scott Hairston to the A's for two minor league pitchers and PTBNL.

While the move has no effect on the Cubs, I find it interesting. Hairston has been quietly having a good year for himself, and it makes me wonder, if they are aquiring a player like Hairston, could it mean they are trying to win and dont intend to deal Holliday?

And on the Padres end, with the eariler rumors of Heath Bell to the Cubs, could the Padres have dalth Hairston with the intent of replaceing him with a younger outfielder, say Sam Fuld or Jake Fox?

You do realize who the A's GM is, right?

They're definitely trading Holliday if they can get good enough value for him.

Its unfortunate to be in the A's shoes because they really should have the pieces to be competitive in the rather bleh AL West, but tons of players aren't hitting and some of the pitchers have been disappointing or just outright injured. (Devine and Duscherer haven't played)

They'll probably deal Holliday. They probably dealt for him in the first place to set up this win-win situation. If they are competitive they are adding a skilled and quality hitter to their lineup. If not, they can deal him at the deadline for a decent value. Problem is he hasn't really been hitting that well this year and that might hurt his value.

I'll go ahead and promise no one is trading any pieces to make room for Sam Fuld. His trade value is zero.

PTBNL In Scott Hairston Deal: Sean Gallagher

By Tim Dierkes [July 13 at 2:48am CST]

Sean Gallagher is headed to the Padres as part of the Scott Hairston deal, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Gallagher was the player to be named later, eight days after we learned the Padres acquired pitchers Ryan Webb and Craig Italiano for Hairston.

A year ago, Gallagher was regarded as the centerpiece of the package the Cubs sent to Oakland for Rich Harden. However, Gallagher's stock dropped shortly thereafter when a shoulder injury surfaced. He still has upside.

I actually thought it was going to be Gallagher after I read some comments on the trade --something about a major league ready starting pitcher, who already had some experience in the big leagues. It also goes to show that the Padres may have been scouting or interested in Gallagher for sometime. If the Cubs never did the Harden deal last year, I wonder if Gallagher could have been used as the center piece this past offseason in a deal for Peavy. The Cubs could have packaged Gallagher, Patterson, Murton, and a few prospects. This would have filled the Padres need for major league ready players with low salaries.

You should be on Last Comic Standing - Calling Gallagher, Patterson, and Murton major league ready players.

They are major league ready. Ready to be good, not so much.

Apparently you haven't seen the team the Pads send out there every day - these guys would be an improvement.

Wait...you are laughing at the absurdity of a trade proposal? What's wrong with it, doesn't involve enough teams?

Good for Sean. San Diego is a great place to get a nice boost for your career. Maybe not so much in the won/loss record, but definitely on the ERA and WHIP.

This is a good trade for San Diego. One of the very few good things the Padres have done this year is pick up a couple pitchers off the junkpile and have them gain some value (Gaudin). One of the pitchers in this trade could end up being successful, especially in Petco.

The funny thing is a day before this trade went down, it was rumored San Diego and those [expletive] midgets from San Francisco might swap Hairston and Sanchez. Remember, Sanchez was a struggling lefty said to have control problems at that time. Little did they know in his next start he'd no hit the Padres.

I just read that Sean will miss the rest of the season to a knee injury. :(
